Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Inspector Luke Thanet and sidekick Sergeant Mike Lineham ( Dead By Morning ) score another hit in Simpson's 10th English procedural. Artist Perdita Master's critically ill mother is in the hospital when Perdita tells her jealous husband that she is filing for divorce. After he follows her to her parents' home, she escapes to an old schoolmate's, where she agrees to act as temporary nanny. The friend returns to find Perdita killed, a plastic bag over her head. Who besides the husband could have wanted Perdita dead, Thanet wonders, and discovers that her possessive mother-in-law and her lover's wife also had motives. Meanwhile, Thanet's home life is in turmoil with his daughter's departure for London and his mother-in-law's heart attack. Fans of Simpson are sure to enjoy this layered, thought-provoking tale.

From Library Journal

When Britisher Simpson's Inspector Thanet and Sergeant Lineham bounce theories off each other, their investigations never fail. They have several suspects to clear this time, after wealthy barrister Vanessa Broxton returns home early unexpectedly to find her children's temporary nanny murdered. Thanet and Lineham narrow the possibilities to the woman's estranged husband, her lover, her lover's wife, and so on, working swiftly through proper police procedure. Simpson writes with efficient panache, introducing the Kentish village setting, the police, murder, and principals in quick order. This is an absorbing mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars D. Simpson is DOOMED to be one of the best mystery writers, April 30, 2000
By A Customer
EVER!

This whodunit examines the death of a young artist, found suffocated in the kitchen of a barrister (the victim had been filling in for the nanny, who'd had an emergency appendectomy). Inspector Thanet has a wealth of suspects to choose from, and it's hard to winnow them down. Was it the extremely jealous soon-to-be ex-husband? Said husband's mother? The deceased's married lover? The married lover's wife? They all had a reason (or two or three)to dispatch her. The fun for the reader is following Thanet on his quest to unmask the guilty party(ies). Dorothy Simpson is simply amazing. She's not an author that you read and put away her latest. You usually reread her books every so often just to delight in her well-sketched characters, extraordinary and yet believable plots, sly wit, terrific dialogue, and her main character, Luke Thanet. She draws him as a fully developed person, with foibles and nobility. It's very hard to believe he's not real. Why they've never made a movie from her series is the real mystery. Are you reading this Spielberg? Get busy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sketch Book, December 10, 2008
Inspector Luke Thanet is called to the home of barrister Vanessa Broxton. Her nanny has been murdered and her kitchen is the crime scene. Perdita Master was a struggling young artist who left a sketch book of drawings of children and passionate portraits of a man.
The man was obviously special to the victim, but who was he and what was their relationship? Her jealous soon to be ex-husband is a prime candidate for the murder?
A tense and well plotted cozy that travels crooked roads. Dorothy Simpson's, DOOMED TO DIE is a fine addition to this classic British series.
