Book Description

December 9, 2004
Doomed Grooms: Gay Husbands of Straight Wives is a self-help book both for women who discover that their husbands are gay and for gay men who are ready to come out to their wives. Written by counselor Bonnie Kaye, the national expert in the field of straight/gay marriages, Doomed Grooms is a follow-up of her first book, Is He Straight? A Checklist for Women Who Wonder.

Topics covered include women's sexual and self-esteem, the effect of the Internet in luring men into the world of homosexuality, the controversy of changing a gay husband's sexuality, the myth of bisexuality, and the mourning stages after a marriage is over. Doomed Grooms also contains interviews with members of Kaye's online support group from different parts of the world, as well as interviews with two of Kaye's gay male peer counselors who help gay husbands in coming out to their wives. She also shares heart-felt letters from both straight wives and gay husbands to show the emotional impact on both sides.

It is estimated that over 3 million women in this country are or have been married to men who are homosexual. Doomed Grooms allows women to come to a sense of closure by helping them understand the different aspects of homosexuality their husbands display.

About the Author

Bonnie Kaye, M.Ed., has been counseling straight/gay couples since 1984, when she organized a support group for straight wives who needed help dealing with their gay husbands. Her first book, Is He Straight? A Checklist for Women Who Wonder, published in 2000, helped thousands of women determine whether or not their husbands were gay. A recognized expert in this specialized field of counseling, Kaye has appeared on numerous international and national television and radio talk shows, including Oprah and Sally Jessy Raphael. After the painful demise of her own marriage due to these circumstances, Kaye found understanding and enlightenment by starting her own support group, Spouses of Gays Association (SOGA), in Philadelphia in the early 1980s. It spawned an international support movement that eventually led to Kaye counseling over 20,000 women. For two years, Kaye authored the controversial, syndicated column, ?Straight Talk,? which addressed the heterosexual viewpoint of the issues facing the gay community. This column was featured in Au Courant, a Philadelphia gay newspaper, as well as other notable gay publications nationwide. Kaye received her Masters in Education degree in Counseling from Antioch University in 1986. In addition to counseling straight/gay couples, Kaye also works for a major social services agency and teaches part-time for Philadelphia Community College.

This book was healing therapy for me. It has helped me to realise my bitterness is fading away and I can once again get on with living. Bonnie is writing about the fall out when it is revealed a spouse or significant other is gay. It was comforting to have a voice through her writing.

I am a bisexual man. This book should be required reading for any bisexual man or straight woman who is contemplating marrying a bisexual male. I am not a faggot. I like men and I think that other men like me are sorely misunderstood. Think your guy is gay? Read this book and learn the difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS ME..., October 14, 2006
This review is from: Doomed Grooms: Gay Husbands of Straight Wives (Paperback)
I am a gay married man who is at the crossroads of his life. After 14 years of living with a woman who is loving, kind, and understanding, I have decided to make the most difficult decision in my life to date--namely, be honest with her. After reading the book "Straight Wives, Shattered Lives," by Bonnie Kaye,I realize that the longer I withhold this truth from her, the more damage I am doing to her life. When I read some of the stories of these women in the book, I was faced with the reality of what I am doing to my own wife. I have fought these feelings of male attractions for many years. I wanted to be the husband my wife needs. I never meant to hurt her. I take my marriage vows very seriously. I married her because I was in love with her, and I still love her so much. But now I realize that I can never love her in the way she deserves to be loved--totally and completely. I know this because I have read the book "Forbidden Love With a Married Man: Email Diaries" by Dennis Schleicher. In his story, I saw the kind of relationship that I too desire with someone of the same sex. Between these two books, I realized I had to be honest with myself before I could be honest with my wife. I know my life will never be the same after I reveal this news, but I don't want to keep hiding behind a lie. Wish me luck.
