5.0 out of 5 stars Perkins-Making a Name for Himself, November 18, 2009
This review is from: The Doomsday (Audio CD)
Elvis Perkins' debut Ash Wednesday was fantastic. Elvis Perkins in Dearland was even better. The Doomsday EP definitely has some gems on it.

Doomsday - Brilliant song from Elvis Perkins in Dearland about the end of the world, but it makes you want to dance. How can you beat that?

Gypsy Davy- A lovely traditional folk song that I've heard from people like Guthrie, Dylan, Incredible String Band, The Carter Family, New Lost City Ramblers, etc. Perkins makes it sound new. I'm glad he's keeping folk music alive with the addition of this song.

Stay Zombie Stay-Another great song with wonderful lyrics.

Stop Drop Rock and Roll- Reminds one of a Buddy Holly or Chuck Berry song. It's another song that makes you want to dance and it's a great throwback to the 50's.

Weeping Mary- This traditional gospel song starts off slowly and then picks up halfway and again makes you want to dance your feet off, or at least clap your hands a lot.

Slow Doomsday- A brilliant version of Doomsday. This version was apparently what Elvis first had in mind before his band encouraged him liven it up. This version is absolutely beautful and gospel like. It reminds me of New Orleans-celebratory, sad, haunting.

Elvis Perkins is making a name for himself. He's actually my favorite Elvis. I look forward to more music from Elvis, with and without his band. Considering that Perkins made his debut in 2007, he's got quite a wealth of heartbreaking, moving, gorgeous stuff in his arsenal.

By the way, they are great live.

Slow Doomsday and Doomsday are both really cool songs. You can hear Doomsday on the Elvis Perkins in Dearland LP.
