This review is from: A Doomsday Reader: Prophets, Predictors, and Hucksters of Salvation (Paperback)
I'm surprised this book isn't better known. I found it in a bookstore years ago, gave it a look over, bought it, read it and enjoyed it immensely. Many cultures and traditions have a legend, a story that goes a bit like this: "Soon, real soon, this unfair world that we live in will end and it will end with a bang! And when that happens, the good people, in other words the people just like us, will be given the wonderful things they deserve, and the bad people, in other words the people who we do not like at all and who are not like us, will get what they deserve and be severely punished." This book includes academic discussion of this theme in different times and places along with actual examples. These examples are taken from a variety of times and places including fringe and ideologically based groups from our own global society. Nazis, Communists, strange cultists, a surprising variety are represented. It's both educational and informative. |
