5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Christian books on recovery from abuse
As the husband of an incest survivor, a Christian, and a board member of a widely known non-profit organizations for survivors, I think I'm a pretty good judge of books on recovery. I've been reading about incest recovery for 25 years, but Door of Hope taught me new things. It combines sound biblical principles with sound counseling advice. The steps to recovery are...

2.0 out of 5 stars Lacking Hope
If you're looking for a quick fix to such a complex form of abuse, this is not the book to read. However this book does bring forth some insight into incestuous molestation and there are exercises given to help you through the steps. The book is all Christian based which is fine, however I do not believe all can be improved in the life of a victim by reading scriptures, I...

The steps to recovery are 1)Face problem, 2)Recount incident, 3)Experience feelings, 4)Establish responsibility, 5)Trace problems/symptoms, 6)Observe and learn, 7)Confront abuser (She acknowledges this is not always advisable), 8)Acknowledge forgiveness, 9)Rebuild self-image & relationships, 10)Concern for others. Yes, she favors a Christian approach. Don't most writers have a bias toward an approach to healing they have found effective? No need for a warning on the cover--if Christianity offends you and you buy the book without glancing inside, just return the book for a refund. I saw nothing in this book that sounded intolerant of non-Christians or homosexuals. Naturally, the author affirms the biblical view that God intends sexual relations to be within marriage. But in case you don't agree with this position, she doesn't run it into the ground--her book is about how the unconditional love of God can heal one's hurts. Sorry about the sermon--I just don't think a certain other reviewer's comments were fair.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE KEY for healing!, November 20, 1999
This review is from: Door of Hope: Recognizing and Resolving the Pains of Your Past (Paperback)
This was THE book of all books for my recovery! If you're not a Christian-that's the missing link in recovery. I have used this book as a study in healing in our church for three sessions. Each time I learned more and recovered more. I wanted the 'quicker-faster' route, as I felt I had already been robbed of enough of my life. READ THIS BOOK--AGAIN & AGAIN--YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY!

Door of Hope is a great read for anyone dealing with or trying to understand the pain of molestation of any sort whether incest or otherwise. Easier reading than Wounded Heart by Allender altho his book is also very beneficial in understanding the challenges of this raging problem. Incredible insights can be gained thru "Door of Hope" - encourage everyone to read it to understand the challenges of a high number of society dealing with this terrible tragedy!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent source towards healing and recovery from abuse., January 1, 1998
This review is from: Door of Hope: Recognizing and Resolving the Pains of Your Past (Paperback)
Jan Frank has written an exceptional book to help lead women through their recovery process as they may move from victim to victor. This book contains a wonderful recovery model that should be a reading priority of any therapist with clients dealing with sexual abuse issues, yet the focus is practical and a source of understanding for any victim of abuse. I consider this a must reading if you or anyone close to you has experienced the pain of sexual abuse.

This is by and far the best book I've seen on dealing with sexual abuse as well as other traumatic hurts in life. Through this, Jan was honest about her own healing process and was willing to make herself vulnerable in sharing. I'm so grateful for a resource written so openly from someone who's been there. I've read others that are informative but this contains an honesty and openness and is personal in a way that the others are not. This book has truly changed my life and continues to help me in the process of healing! Thanks Jan!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I felt supported in my own walk through my pain as I read this book, May 14, 2006

This book felt like a friend when I had no one to talk to or wanted to talk to about the pain, anger, disappointment, crushed dreams and wounding of the memories of incest. Jesus reached out to me with compassion, relatiblity and hope as I read this book. I would reccommend it but it is painful to read through just because of the subject matter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deliverance and Hope, September 1, 2005
This review is from: Door of Hope: Recognizing and Resolving the Pains of Your Past (Paperback)
"Door of Hope" has done more for me than I imagined it would. It encouraged me to have the strength to stand in such a debilitating situation. I was able, after reading this book, to come decisions that I would not have been able to come to otherwise.
God has blessed us with Jan Frank and I thank her for her courage to make a stand against sexual abuse.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the book that helped change my Life., May 12, 2008
This review is from: Door of Hope: Recognizing and Resolving the Pains of Your Past (Paperback)
My faith in God, belief in Jesus Christ, THIS BOOK, and a good Christian therapist gave me the healing I needed. If you are a Christian and want sound, biblical guidance towards healing I highly recommend this book. I found my healing working through the steps Jan lines out about 10 years ago. I gave my copy of the book to someone I met who was struggling as I had. Everyone's timetable is different, some may only need a short time, others longer. It is my sincere belief that working these particular steps are key to being successfull in dealing with childhood abuse. I worked around one step a week. My therapist helped guide me through the processes. I had to keep working on some areas that I especially had trouble with, in all about 6 months worth. I became a BRAND NEW Person with all the attributes I always wanted but couldn't attain. I am re-buying the book to review so that I can help others find the person they were created to be. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Painful, but right on target!, February 17, 2007
By

This review is from: Door of Hope: Recognizing and Resolving the Pains of Your Past (Paperback)
This book changed my life. It was "the" textbook and required reading by my therapist for sorting out a painful past. Greatly accelerated the process. A lot of "therapy" took place between therapist sessions as a result of this book. Certainly not a substitute for professional help, but a great adjunct. Covered a lot more ground, and made faster progress (healing) in fewer sessions (and a lot less $$$$$$!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book of all on the subject, April 30, 2008
This review is from: Door of Hope: Recognizing and Resolving the Pains of Your Past (Paperback)
Of all the Christian recovery books, this is the most helpful on this particular subject matter. Not only does it contain everything the other books have, it covers additional pertinent topics other books leave out. One will find the author speaks only as someone could speak who has personally suffered such abuse. Jan Frank offers a handle to grab as her words become a healing balm to the soul in its journey to recovery. This book restores one's heart, mind, and emotions to a proper perspective on life and boundaries in relationships.
