5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Story of Magic and High Adventure
James Dashner is a great writer and an all around good guy. In his first book "A Door in the Woods" he tells the strange tale of young Jimmy Fincher and his brush with magic and a dark destiny. The book flows well and is easy to read, making it ideal for younger readers. There are some frightening moments that might be a bit much for really young children but that's...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good start
A Door in the Woods is the first book in James Dashner's Jimmy Fincher Saga, and it's a decent start to the series and a decent first book for Dashner. The writing isn't all that bad, but there is room for growth. Dashner relies a little too heavily on what I'm sure he is trying to play off as quaint, southern colloquialisms. Every character in the book uses them, and...

The book flows well and is easy to read, making it ideal for younger readers. There are some frightening moments that might be a bit much for really young children but that's the only concern. If you've got kids that like fantasy, this book is a must.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Door in the Woods ............. Molly's Reviews, March 7, 2004

This review is from: A Door in the Woods (Jimmy Fincher Saga) (The Jimmy Fincher Saga, Bk. 1) (Paperback)
A Door in the Woods has a place in the home and school library. Classroom and home teachers will find the work a valuable asset for both assigned and pleasure reading in the classroom setting. Youngsters in the target audience are sure to find the book to their liking for their own pleasure reading choices. Vocabulary is well within the range of target audience, those reading on third reader level may need a little help with a word here and there.

Enjoyed the read, happy to recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Book!, April 11, 2006
This review is from: A Door in the Woods (Jimmy Fincher Saga) (The Jimmy Fincher Saga, Bk. 1) (Paperback)
This is an absolutely spellbinding book! It grips the reader from the first words, and won't let go. A wonderful, very easily readable book that young kids, as well as adults can relate to, and enjoy. The character's behavior is realistic and believable. The hero is a very likable little fellow, whose adventures I find myself completely absorbed in!

4.0 out of 5 stars Read the entire series, April 11, 2006
This review is from: A Door in the Woods (Jimmy Fincher Saga) (The Jimmy Fincher Saga, Bk. 1) (Paperback)
Rating this book poorly without reading the entire series is like saying that Lord of the Rings Book One is a lousy book because we never find out what happens to the ring. It's the first book of a series!

Having read the entire series with my eight-year-old son, I will agree that the first book is the weakest of the four (thus the four stars.) But both my son and I loved the fast pacing, the many plot twists, and each book is progressively better. The fourth book is an abosulute mind blower. Not what I expected at all.

This is a young adult fantasy, so don't go in expecting Terry Brooks. But as a family read or for anyone eight years or older who enjoys a real world fantasy with lots of plots twists, some very scary evil creatures, and pretty cool powers, this is a great choice.

Definitely worth your time.

I started reading this series with my 11-year old son recently. He became hooked right away. He is now reading book three... and can't put it down. I am so grateful to the author, James Dashner, for creating a vivid and compelling story line that captured my son's attention. This book deserves 5 stars because it changed my son's reading from a chore to an exciting adventure.

I just finished "A Door In The Woods" and I have to say this author is going places. It was very original and entertaining. I would recommend it to anyone who has children with a sense of adventure. It's a real page turner and kept me hooked until the very end. Great job Mr. Dashner. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Saga Continues . . ., April 12, 2006
This review is from: A Door in the Woods (Jimmy Fincher Saga) (The Jimmy Fincher Saga, Bk. 1) (Paperback)
James Dashner is a fresh and original voice in the Young Adult market. Both my 14 year old daughter and my 12 year old son enjoyed his book, A Door in the Woods, and went right on the read the next book in the series. The telltale sign of an excellent book is when kids tell their friends about it and recommend it, both of which my children did. A Door in the Woods is a great start to introducing the series and we are looking forward to much more from Mr. Dashner. Be prepared for late nights if your kids start the book---they won't be able to put it down!

5.0 out of 5 stars A roller-coaster of a story!, January 6, 2006
This review is from: A Door in the Woods (Jimmy Fincher Saga) (The Jimmy Fincher Saga, Bk. 1) (Paperback)
This is one of the few books that I have recommended to just about everyone I know. Jimmy Fincher is the kind of character you can't help but love and is a typical boy in every way, from his love of the gross to his occasional eye-rolling denseness. I've read each of the books in this series in a little over a day. They're that good.
