A user friendly story with great illustrations.,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Doorbell Rang (Paperback)
I have got a lot of mileage out of this book. With my own son, it has brought back wonderful memories of his own Grandma's cookies. As a Day Care Provider, I have delighted my day care children with this story during "circle time". They would get a kick out of following the kitty in the illustrations. As an investigations math instructor, I have relied on this story for Grade levels 2&3 to explain the concept of fractions and division. Every kid that has heard this story, for whatever the reason, gives it a two thumbs up.

Fun to Read,

This review is from: The Doorbell Rang (Paperback)
This book was one of my daughters favorites when she was little. She giggled every time I said, with great zeal, "And the doorbell rang"! My house has always been quite active which made this story perfect for us. For any parent with a busy life, this book with tickle you to the core. I enjoyed reading it as much as my daughter enjoyed listening to it. Truly a fun read!

A Good Book for A Young Child's Library,
This review is from: The Doorbell Rang (Paperback)
How silly... they list the age ranges for this delightful book as 4 to 8 years of age; like 2 year olds aren't interested in cookies and friends!
In fact this small book is a good choice for any young child's library, especially as this is a story that can grow with a child. When they are really young it can be a tale about friendship and sharing. When they grow older, the sly parent can introduce a math lesson along with a reading lesson. (At first there are 12 cookies for 2 children, which makes 6 each. When 2 additional children visit that makes 3 cookies each and so on.) This book was on my entering kindergartners summer reading list and we definitely agree that it is a great read. Certainly my just-turned 3 year-old and 5 year-old give this wonderful book two thumbs up.

Great for Childeren of Any Age,
By Elizabeth Houston (Tucson, AZ USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Doorbell Rang (Paperback)
This a great book for almost every child. I am an Education Major at Pima Community College in Tucson, Az. I work also work at a Pre-school and the childeren love this book (Childeren ages 12 months to 3 1/2 years). We read it atleast once a day. This is a great book because they don't know it but they are learning how to add and subtract, using cookies. It's great because if you read it aloud to them and then show them how many kids show up, then they start to realize how many cookies are actually there, and then it gets to how many cookies each child will get. The first time I read this book to my kids, they loved it and after the second time they stated to pick up on the subratcion part of the book and now every time we read the book they can come up with the anserws on thier own. It's really amazing to me how they will start to pick it up.

The Doorbell Rang,
This is a fun book that children will have you reading over and over. They will remember the words set by the mother and repeat them with you. There are lessons to learn here as well as the delight of having this read to them. First is the social lesson that no matter how many children arrive each time the doorbell rings, the family will share the cookies with them. The mother has baked a dozen cookies for her two kids to eat, so when each additional friend arrives the dozen is divided to share with the new kids. This teaches children to share and also gives them a simple math lesson in breaking up the original dozen. Just when it looks like each child will only get one cookie, the bell rings again and it's grandma with more. Kids won't notice but mom is mopping the footprints on the kitchen floor with more being added with each new friend coming in....she doesn't seem to mind the mess! Being published in paperback has made this an affordable edition to a child's library.

I have been reading Pat Hutchins books to children for many years. They are all wonderful. The Doorbell Rang is great for learning problem solving, math concepts, and the joy and sometimes the dilemma of sharing!

A well-written and illustrated story!,

This review is from: The Doorbell Rang (Paperback)
Sam and Victoria's mother makes a dozen cookies to share. Then the doorbell rings and two friends arrive. Now the cookies must be divided between four people. Just as this is settled, the doorbell rings again. How many people can a dozen cookies be shared with? Not a problem. Grandma shows up just in time with more! This book is a must for children learning multiplication and division. I am an Education Major at the University of Arizona. I took this book into a third grade class just finishing up their multiplication/division unit. We integrated their white boards and they illustrated the division of cookies, and the resulting equation as we proceeded through the story. They really had fun! I highly recommend this book. The story is well written and the illustrations are terrific!

The Best Book,

If you've got a child.........this book is for them! The book is perfectly themed with cookies, and sharing them with friends of all ethnicities. It truly is a great book, one of my childhood favorites, it's very repetitive, in a good way, and in no time your child, just like I did, will be saying it along with you, "AND THE DOORBELL RANG!". A great read, with wonderful, detailed illustrations that still hold my interest.

one of my favorites,

After teaching preschool for years, I'm now a parent, and this is one of the first books I made sure we had, beside some basic board books. Even our older infant likes the rhythmic tone of this book, but I've never known a child in the 3-5 range who hasn't loved it. They gradually come to understand the math concepts, but as with any good concept book, the story comes first, and it's simple, sweet, and fun, with evocative illustrations and nice kids.

Cookies anyone?,
By DD67 "babyonahill" (Virginia) - See all my reviews

This isn't a very long story, but great for the concept of sharing, counting and math skills. Grandma makes cookies, but will there be enough for everyone? What do the children do as more children arrive at grandma's house? How should they divide up the cookies?
Great for a unit with C is for cookies, sharing, and/or dividing. Or just a fun book to read. |
