Anyone who wants to learn how to install a door perfectly the first time will find The Doorhanger's Handbook to be a wealth of good advice. It explains how to choose the best hardware, install jambs, and hang a wide variety of doors. Covers installations from a grand front entrance to a bi-fold closet door.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

For the inexperienced, a casual walk through a building-supply store will yield doors of amazing variety, most ready to mount, some already in prebuilt frames. It might seem simple enough to buy one, bring it home, and install it. Yet most new, perfectly dimensioned doors need to be fitted into openings that are far from being perfectly straight or plumb, and therein lies a problem that any budding or experienced carpenter will encounter repeatedly. Hanging a door is no small feat: it can be much like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, requires care and skill to be done properly, and can be a major puzzlement indeed to someone new to the process. Katz takes the process from beginning to end, choosing interior and exterior doors, proper hardware and jambs for installation, and installing specialty doors, like arched and French doors, Dutch doors, pocket doors, and many more. He shows how to use jigs and templates to speed up many tasks, and includes a large section on the essentials of weather stripping. Well illustrated and thoroughly diagrammed, this is a book that should be read by every carpenter and do-it-yourselfer who wants to produce professional results and avoid the many pitfalls and common mistakes in hanging doors of any kind. --Mark A. Hetts

5.0 out of 5 stars The bible on doors!, December 1, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Doorhanger's Handbook (Hardcover)
Being an amateur woodworker and sometime home repairman (my home), I've read a lot of books on practical woodworking. While most do contain some general information about hanging doors, I had never found one that told the whole story without skipping the important details that spell easy success. But now, here it is! The Doorhanger's Handbook is a gem! Want to save time and do the job right? It's all here: excellent photos, diagrams, and step-by-step instructions that unlock the secrets of fitting out and hanging any kind of door.

But Katz's book is no mere how-to manual. Through his commiserative, down-to-earth style, with its many helpful insights and anecdotes, he makes truly accessible a vast wealth of expertise and woodworking experience. Be sure to pay close attention to the great templates and jigs Katz uses (and shows how to make). These alone are well worth the price of the book.

Mr. Katz writes for the rest of us as most others write for only those who are experts already. This book is beautifully illustrated (with photos by the author), and is very easy to read and understand. Katz knows what he's talking about as he is a professional carpenter who has been through the tough jobs and tells us how to figure out projects and make the job easier by using the right products and tools.
