The bible on doors!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Doorhanger's Handbook (Hardcover)
Being an amateur woodworker and sometime home repairman (my home), I've read a lot of books on practical woodworking. While most do contain some general information about hanging doors, I had never found one that told the whole story without skipping the important details that spell easy success. But now, here it is! The Doorhanger's Handbook is a gem! Want to save time and do the job right? It's all here: excellent photos, diagrams, and step-by-step instructions that unlock the secrets of fitting out and hanging any kind of door. But Katz's book is no mere how-to manual. Through his commiserative, down-to-earth style, with its many helpful insights and anecdotes, he makes truly accessible a vast wealth of expertise and woodworking experience. Be sure to pay close attention to the great templates and jigs Katz uses (and shows how to make). These alone are well worth the price of the book.

THE BOOK IS THE BEST BOOK OUT THERE IN REGARDS TO OVERALL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HANGING JUST ABOUT EVERY DOOR. THE AUTHOR GIVES VERY DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS IN HANGING DOORS IN DIFFERENT APPLICATIONS. I AM A SMALL TIME DOOR HANGER AND MAYBE HANG TWO TO THREE DOORS A WEEK ASIDE FROM MY FULL TIME JOB. I USE THIS BOOK AS A REFERENCE AND HAVE CHANGED MY STYLE OF HANGING DOORS COMPLETELY USING THE TECHNIQUES THAT ARE DESCRIBED IN THIS BOOK, MAKING ME MORE EFFECIENT AT MY CRAFT. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO THE DO-IT-YOURSELFER OR THE MASTER FINISH CARPENTER!!

Mr. Katz writes for the rest of us as most others write for only those who are experts already. This book is beautifully illustrated (with photos by the author), and is very easy to read and understand. Katz knows what he's talking about as he is a professional carpenter who has been through the tough jobs and tells us how to figure out projects and make the job easier by using the right products and tools.

excellent in depth and accessible to the layman,

Mr. Katz has done a wonderful job of taking the mystery out of one of the most potentially frustrating and time consuming areas of the carpenter's trade. As one who spent many long hours learning this skill, I only wish I had had so clear and concise a reference when I was busy making expensive mistakes. The illustrations and photos are abundant, and the text doesn't assume a great deal of specialized knowledge on the part of the reader. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn a common sense approach to this subject. This book belongs in any serious woodworker's library.

Definately not for beginners!,

This book seems to be geared for experienced carpenters only. Although it covers just about all aspects of doors and hanging them, I found that it lacks understandable "how-to" when trying to troubleshoot (and troubleshooting is almost 95% of the hanging process). If you have never installed a prehung door, do yourself a favor: Hire a good contractor and watch how they do it.

This book is nothing more than an earlier edition of the book "Installing And Hanging Doors" by Gary Katz, For Pros By Pros series. The "For Pros" people sinply took this book changed the title and reprinted it. (and also charged alot less money for the newer version). Everything is the same, same photos, same text, everything copied word for word. Everything is
the same not a single page has been changed or added. I returned this book the same day that I got it.

I wanted to craft garage doors in the slide-fold fashion. This book provided me with design resources to continue with my project, which I am in the midst of designing and building. Between the internet (which offers many expensive hardware options to construct slide-fold doors) and the ideas presented in this book, I believe my design will function appropriately using much less expensive technology such as a Stanley sliding door mechanism, some welded hinges, and a bottom channel-guide and bearing design that limits the lateral motion of the hinged panels as they are displaced by the effects of wind or the process of opening and closing. If you are involved in the process of creating or installing transitional elements in homes or commercial facilities, you just might find the information in this book will give you the understanding required to surmount problems before they arise.

Although I am a beginner when it comes to hanging doors, I appreciate the textbook like way of this book. It lays out the best tools, best materials, and best techniques as practiced by a very experienced craftsman. I showed it to an experienced contractor and he told me he saw a few things in there he had learned the hard way. If you plan to hang more than one door, buy this book.
