This review is from: Doorkeeper of the Heart: Versions of Rabi'a (Paperback)
Born a woman, sold into slavery as a child in Mesopotamia, and slept little to pray for prayer. Released from slavery after her owner witnessed a blinding light in the garden where she prayed, she devoted her life to her Beloved. She spurned miracles, although she was capable of them as a way to teach. Since Rabi'a's oral tradition is passed down over the centuries by Sufi scribes, the anecdotes, poems, and miracle stories associated with her can provide the merest glimpse of this extraordinary life. We owe the author thanks for his effort to bring Rabi'a alive to readers of English.
