Book Description

Wrestling with giants, tracking evil spirits, and starting a blood feud with heretic wizards—it’s just another day of searching for truth. An epic sword and sorcery mosaic in the style of A Game of Thrones or the Belgariad.

Tashi the sheriff is one of the last priests of the Traveler. Avoiding the Brotherhood of Executioners, he visits ancient temples in order to close the Doors to Eternity—the places where magic creeps into our world. Something went horribly wrong when the Inner Islands erupted, something only a priest can fix. Following riddles from a dead faith and a stolen sword, his quest ignites brushfires of heresy and civil war, making new enemies with every border he crosses. All roads lead to the legendary City of the Gods.

Seasoned with humor and action, this world has been built from the coins and calendars up. Society, magic, martial arts, and even the gods follow strict codes. All the characters see themselves as the hero, even the villains. Listen and they’ll tell you why.

Tashi's quest concludes in "Dreams of the Fallen": the last two temples need to be closed, and each one gets more difficult.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I loved the humor and the intricacy of the world. The oriental feudal flavor reminded me of the Book of Five Rings. My main complaint was that the book ends before the conflicts are resolved. But at over 270K words, the whole epic wouldn't fit well in one print-on-demand volume. Fortunately, the next two in the series wrap up everything nicely.
I originally wrote this series for an assistant editor at a big-6 publisher who liked my writing, but none of the books in my file cabinet. So I researched what other authors in their brand wrote, epics that build an entire new world. I spent 3 years filling notebooks and writing the search for the Answer. At page 750, three-quarters of the way through the tale, I submitted another query. By then, the assistant editor had moved on to another company, and the chief editor told me "I can't sell this." I think I sent queries to 20 publishers and 50 agents. No one wanted it. Discouraged, I put the book in storage for 10 years. When I began self-publishing, I pulled this one out to offer variety on my shelf, although I didn't think it was half as good as "Foundation for the Lost." When this book reached #16 on the epic list, I cried. If my "worst" book could do this, I could be a writer. Thank all of you for your support, encouragement, and making me part of your world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic Fantasy - highly recommended!! January 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Intricate but paced to allow the reader to get the information in bite-sized chunks, "Doors to Eternity" is the beginning to a story that will delight readers who enjoy epic fantasy, quest fantasy, adventure and well-written stories. The characters are colorful and well-developed, and the plot flows clearly from one point to the next. Rhine has created a world to delight readers - definitely check out this new fantasy world, get to know its colorful characters (I loved the smith, myself) and enjoy the ride!

5.0 out of 5 stars An intricate story with hints of George R.R. Martin January 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Scott Rhine's new story is one with great detail in a world you will undoubtedly feel come to life. With hints of George R.R. Martin and Robert Jordan's early Wheel of Time series, this is a story you won't be able to put down. As Tashi the Sheriff attempts to understand his own chosen path, so do many others. Where will destiny lead and which gods will prevail? Journey with the vivid characters Rhine creates in this unjust world; see who will wind up on top and who's fate will fall on the shoulders of a boy king striving to fit into over-sized boots. If you are a fan of fantasy, myth, and magic, I highly recommend that you grab a copy of this story soon. The sequels will be out before you know it at the pace Scott is writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not normally of fan of this genre, but... January 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am not fond of this genre. Typically, the narrative overshadows the dialogue and one could get lost as the story develops, and I am not one who has the patience to lose hours and several chapters in a setting or backdrop to a story. Scott Rhine, however, is a genius, for he does not write in the aforementioned fashion. Doors to Eternity is not only a world he created from the ground up, it is filled with humor, suspense, and has a touch of a love story. Scott strikes a balance between the necessary narrative and engaging dialogue and treats his readers to a fantastic and thrilling ride through a world that is wonderfully created leaving the reader eager for more. Bravo!

More About the Author

Scott Rhine wanted to find a job that combined his love of reading with math problem solving, so he studied both short stories and computer languages. As a techno-gypsy, he worked on optimizing some of the fastest and largest supercomputers in the world. A couple of degrees, patents, and children later, at forty-eight, he still didn't know what he wanted to be when he grew up. When his third publication "Doors to Eternity" unexpectedly hit #16 on the Amazon epic fantasy list, he decided to retire from engineering in order to become a full-time author. Humor is a part of every story he writes because people are funny, even when they don't think so. In the real world, something always goes wrong and people have flaws. If you can't laugh at yourself, someone is probably doing it for you. Strong female characters also play a major role in his stories because he's married to a beautiful PhD who can edit, break boards, and use a chainsaw.

He highly recommends college students join American Youth Hostels and spend at least a few weeks bumming around Europe on a youth bus pass. Such a trip helps give you perspective about parts of your life that come from your environment versus what's really you.
