3.0 out of 5 stars Great Compilation...
This Greatest Hits collection of "The Doors" is an excellent collection of the band's greatest hits from their first album to their last. All of those great tunes from "The Doors" you hear on the radio are now available on one CD. Although the song selection is very good, the reason I rated this album 3 stars is because there are a couple of Doors favorites missing such...

I wrote a review of this a while ago, but for some reason it posted as an anonymously, and I finally decided to go back and update, making sure it posted on my name.

Most of the reviews here suggest that this is a good CD to buy if you are looking to get into The Doors but don't want to buy the individual albums. Well, they are wrong. This CD not only doesn't represent The Doors well, but also the songs here are edited.
Back when I first was getting into classic rock, this is the first Doors CD that I bought, and let me tell you, I listened to this and nothing but this CD for at least a week straight when I got it. BUT, after buying The Doors debut album, I discovered that about 8 MINUTES (!!) of the End is completely edited out. You are left with just some of the parts used in the movie Apocalypse Now. Now, if you have listened to this "version" of the End, you may think "Hey, this is pretty cool" and you will listen to it a couple times and thats it (that's what I did anyway). YOU ARE TOTALLY MISSING OUT on what I believe to be one of the greatest songs ever. Also, on Break On Thru, it seems like Jim is saying "she get...she get" instead of what he actually says "she gets high, she gets high". Also you are missing out on so many other great songs such as When the Music's Over, Five to One, Whiskey Bar, Spanish Caravan, Unkown Soldier, etc. Don't worry though. The Best of the Doors, a 2-CD set has all these songs in their completely unedited glory. It has any song a beginner could possibly want, actually. And a few that you don't know about yet, but will instantly love. So please, don't buy this. You'll be doing yourself a favor to spend a couple more dollars on the 2-CD set. If you buy this junk you'll just be throwing it away because you will eventually move on to the 2-CD set anyway, or even the individual albums.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good in its own Right, September 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Doors - Greatest Hits [Elektra] (Audio CD)
Despite its "Enhanced" status, this album cannot be recommended above the "Best of the Doors" Two-CD set which is also commonly available. The songs on this album are superb pieces of music, but the aforementioned remaining Doors compilation album contains all the songs found here, with the exception of "The Ghost Song", and many more, for generally only a minimally higher cost. In juxtaposition, the "Best of the Doors" has quite a bit more worth than this comparatively meager album.

5.0 out of 5 stars All You Need (Or At Least All I Need) From The Doors, April 23, 2000
This review is from: The Doors - Greatest Hits [Elektra] (Audio CD)
This is an excellent collection of Doors songs, and I don't believe it's missing anything crucial. I am not a "die-hard" Doors fan, and for anyone else who isn't, but still really enjoys their music, I definitely highly recommend this. From the very calm, low key "Riders on the Storm" to the upbeat blues-style "Love Me Two Times" to the fast, harsh "Break On Through" to their most famous classic, "Light My Fire", this CD has a great variation of Doors songs. I also was introduced to some of their songs I had never heard before that I now enjoy a lot such as "Love Her Madly". "People Are Strange" is also one of the top songs on there. To put it simply, my Doors collection is complete with this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars ANYONE THINKING OF BUYING THIS CD READ THIS FIRST, May 5, 2001

This review is from: The Doors - Greatest Hits [Elektra] (Audio CD)
This is the first Doors CD that I bought, and let me tell you, I listened to this and nothing but this CD for at least a week straight when I got it. BUT, after buying In Concert, and then The Doors debut album, I discovered that about 8 MINUTES (!!) of the End is completely edited out. Now, if you have listened to this "version" of the End, you may think "Hey, this is pretty cool" and you will listen to it a couple times and thats it (that's what I did anyway). YOU ARE TOTALLY MISSING OUT on what I believe to be one of the greatest songs ever. Also, on Break On Thru, Jim only says "she get...she get" instead of what he actually says "she gets high, she gets high". Also you are missing out on so many other great songs such as When the Music's Over, Five to One and so on. So, if you absolutely need to get a greatest hits I would suggest the 2 CD best of The Doors instead. But really you should just get the studio albums. (Start with The Doors or L.A. Woman). Well, I hope I helped you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Introducing, The Doors!!!, March 6, 2005
This review is from: The Doors - Greatest Hits [Elektra] (Audio CD)
The Doors were a rock band in the late sixties and early seventies, that weren't around all that long, and didn't make a whole lot of albums in their six year run as a band. Due to organist Ray Manzarek and drummer John Densmore's love for jazz music, the musical art-form was somehow tangled into the blues and rock influences that were, The Doors.

Though mainly Jim Morrison's musical outlet, each musician had its own role in the band. Improvisation played a key role in the band, as demonstrated in songs as Light My Fire. Though most rock bands of the time had improvisation, such as guitar solos, The Doors each interacted with each other to deliver great improvisational solos.

Some miss the point and call this band, Jim Morrison & The Doors, when it is really, a band as a whole. No other musician at the time could of replaced any of the members in this band.

To the music on this cd:

You basically get all of their big hits here. Light My Fire, Hello I Love You, Love Me Two Times, Break On Through, Touch Me, etc. This IS a good place to START with The Doors. You get the gist of the popular side of The Doors, though to fully understand the band as they were, you will have to get the individual albums, which can be not as listener friendly as you would hope.

The Doors were enjoying commercial success right up until the death of singer Jim Morrison. It seemed to be over too fast, but luckily the six studio albums they recorded together are all remasterd and easy to maintain.

The Doors remain probaly within the top 10 most influential rock bands in history. The Doors' music has stood the test of time, and is quite popular in schools, and for teenagers today. I can speak for them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some of their greatest hits, but not all of them, November 30, 2005

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Doors - Greatest Hits [Elektra] (Audio CD)
The Doors were a four-member band from 1965 until the death of Jim Morrison in 1971. This CD contains some of the most popular songs of the Doors but not all of them and not necessarily the BEST. Rather these are the ones that were (and are) heard on the radio the most. Also, to say this is a good sample of their music would not be completely accurate. They played a lot of Blues. The only blues song in this collection is (a great) Roadhouse Blues.

As these are the Doors, this collection is good ... very good, but since they produced so few albums, just go ahead and buy the albums.

The 4 stars are for the compilation, not the music itself. There is nothing 'BAD' about the CD, (in fact most people really like it), it is just incomplete.

I love this CD. It's missing a few Doors fundamentals like "Waiting for the Sun," but a great compilation nonetheless. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars For casual fans only-beginners, get the 2 CD set!, December 14, 2002
This review is from: The Doors - Greatest Hits [Elektra] (Audio CD)
Yes it is good, because it's the Doors.
However if you are an experienced Doors fan like me you know that the Doors have released about 10 or 15 greatest hits albums- and thats just the American ones. So what I'm saying is-THERE ARE BETTER DOORS COMPILATIONS OUT THERE!!! If you only like the Doors for the songs you hear on the radio and thats all you want, than by all means find, and left click the "Buy Now" button. If you really want to get to know the Doors than look for "The Best of the Doors"- 2 CD set.

The reason you beginners shouldn't buy this one is that its leaves out a whole lot of the Doors best material. It includes "Hello, I Love You";"Light My Fire";"People Are Strange";"Love Me
Two Times";"Riders On the Storm";"Touch Me";"LA Woman";and"Love Her Madly" the way they should be. However "Break On Through" is edited (because Jim says "she gets high")., "Roadhouse Blues" is a good song but it is usually only included as the live version, which is all well and good, but if you're new or you like the studio version, you're out of luck. Furthermore no songs off of the Doors first "post Miami" album are included ("Roadhouse Blues", the studio version, hails from there). Also included is "The Ghost Song" which is just Jim reading a poem which was then put to music after he died. It's not terrible, but in no way should this be considered a "greatest hit". The album also boasts that it includes a multi media file to play on your computer, which it does, but naturally the video is accompanied by the worst song on the whole album ("The Ghost Song"). The most offensive thing I could find on the whole album is "The End". What I mean by that is, someone went and said, "Hey, remember how they played 'The End' on 'Apocalypse Now'? Well, lets put that version on!" That version is a complete butchering of the origional. The origional is arguably one of the Doors best songs. This version is about six and a half minutes long, the real version is eleven minutes and fourty-four seconds, exactly. Even worse than that, is that of those six and a half minutes only about four are the song, the rest are REALLY corny jungle sound effects and some weird noise at the beginning that has nothing to do with either the Doors or the jungle.

So if you want the main point, what I've been trying to say all along, BUY THE TWO DISC SET! It has the studio version of "Roadhouse Blues", a ton of extra songs that are essential to experience the Doors correctly, and "The End" in all twelve minutes of its glory-without the jungle noises!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Beginner's Doors Album, June 19, 2001

This review is from: The Doors - Greatest Hits [Elektra] (Audio CD)
This is a very simple Doors Album. All the pop hits. "Light My Fire", "Break on Through", and Riders on the Storm are all here. This is great for the fan that isn't familiar with the highly influential band, but if you're a seasoned Doors fan you don't need this collection
