5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent collection, August 6, 2006
This is a strong, entertaining collection of stories by a writer with a keen eye for the things that others normally turn away from - the venal, dirty things, the selfish things, the little idiocies that people do every day - and while he delights in them, finds them hilarious, he's also celebrating what it is to be human. In a paradoxical way, I don't find the stories misanthropic - well, not entirely - because Haines is showing he appreciates people enough to look at them clearly, without benefit of soft lenses.

That said, the stories are dark - some of them are horror, others science fiction, even a few fairy tales, but coloured scarlet or deep crimson - though they're always funny, well rounded, and utterly candid. I would recommend this collection to anyone who enjoys a witty look at the gutty underbelly of the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Darkness with a Twist, August 22, 2006
Such a broad range among these stories, fantasy, horror and sccence fiction. All seem to have more than you expect, some have a gentle twist of the knife others rent you apart. A unique voice and a compelling read.
