4.0 out of 5 stars A magnificent album!
I stole this album (on vinyl, natch) from my brother in about 1984 (I was 10) and I distinctly remember hearing Matters of the Heart as well as Doot-Doot (the song) on pop radio at the time. I listened to that album all the time; it was a favorite for a long time. Years later, I completely forgot about it. I just accidentally ran across this reissue the other day in...

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 good songs
My 80's collection would not be complete without the excellent tracks 'Doot Doot' and 'The Road'. Getting an extended version of 'Doot Doot' was the bonus that caused me to buy this CD vice a used copy of the original.. I believe it was worth it, even though there is nothing astounding in the extended version. There are no gems in the rest of the tracks. :-)...

I just accidentally ran across this reissue the other day in a record store; boy, did it take me back. I still love this album. The production and arrangements are sheer poetry, as well as being viscerally exciting; the same goes for the near-literary-quality lyrics. The singer's voice (whoever it was, there are no performance credits) is delightfully vivid; same goes for some subtly expressive synth work. The only two reasons I'm not giving this CD 5 stars are: 1)the mastering is awful. It sounds like this disc was pressed directly from the vinyl-compressed tapes. 2)the two bouncy-rhythmed "bonus tracks" (b-sides from the singles?), while not horrible, do not fit in with the generally "lusty" atmosphere of the rest of the album (there is an undercurrent of S&M, or some such, to some of the lyrics; was I aware of that when I was 10? Ask my therapist! 8-) With those two caveats in mind, I heartily recommend this album to music fans of any sort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Karl Hyde and crew have always known where they are, September 19, 2003
This review is from: Doot Doot (Audio CD)
No matter the ridiculousness of the music (be it pop, rock, techno, dub, house, industrial, new wave, psychedelic -no particular order), This band from Screen Gemz, Freur, and both the pop and techno versions of Underworld, created some of the coolest and refreshing music that stands the test of time. Albeit recent fans out there now only have ever heard the newer Underworld (1992 - 2003), it's nice that us old school hardcore fans are still here, nods Bill Skulley. Those old tapes and vinyls are worn out!!!

The re-release of Freur's Doot Doot was a wonderful surprise as most of their stuff is super rare. It's a truly extraordinary cd for it's time and reminds me of how much I truly adored Duran Duran's Rio when I first listened to it. Karl Hyde just has a rapturous voice to listen to, not unlike Simon LeBon.

When the Dubnobasswithmyheadman cd came out in '94 I was totally thrilled they didn't give up, and honestly I was ecstatic with the album...a most brilliant album...one that will never leave this boy's cd player.

I RECOMMEND ANYTHING BY KARL HYDE AND CO.

4.0 out of 5 stars However You Pronounce It, It's Pretty Neat, January 5, 2001

This review is from: Doot Doot (Audio CD)
After being forced to change their name from an unpronounceable symbol (is this where Prince got the idea?) to the almost unpronounceable "Freur", the band put out this one album of oblique, trippy but quite pleasant new wave. Generally good stuff all the way through, although I was hoping for a bit more lyrically here and there. "Theme From the Film of the Same Name" adds studio audio verite to pretty good effect, and I enjoy the sea shanty-ness of "Hey Ho Away We Go". Despite its lyrics, "Doot Doot" remains my favorite track for its incredible atmosphere. OK, so it's not "Born Slippy" (actually, it's more "Underneath the Radar") but it's still pretty good stuff. Fans of atmospheric new wave should probably give this a whirl.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem, August 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Doot Doot (Audio CD)
Not many people know of Freur (now Underworld, who alot of people know). I believe anyone who has obtained this cd is holding a real gem from the 80's. Alot better then most of the stuff out from this time period. There is just so much depth to this album. Very moody and there are two songs that are just hilariously 80's!!! But like i said, alot of depth and emotion packed in here.

I am going to use this review to concentrate on the single "Doot-Doot". Plenty of early techno like beats and nonsense lyrics is whats make Doot-Doot, yet that is not to say these synth beats are bad, it's a great example of early New Wave. To be honest i would like the song if the lyrics were just "and now we go, doot-doot" with the doot-doot in the background. Near the end some synth riffs come in, and with the 'doot-doot' in the background it sounds quite nice. The rest of the album isnt bad either.

5.0 out of 5 stars How did I miss this for all these years?, February 25, 2003
This review is from: Doot Doot (Audio CD)
I stumbled across Underworld (Mk1) in the early 90's and Change the Weather and Underneath the Radar are among two of the most-played CDs I own. Somehow I missed the connection between Freur and Underworld until just recently, and I have to say this sounds just like classic Underworld - It fits nicely with the other two albums in feel and style.

I'm also a fan of electronica/trance/whateveryouwannacallit so Underworld is like the band-of-all-trades for me - I've never met an Underworld album I didn't like...

3.0 out of 5 stars a great disappointment for the true fans.., March 23, 2000
This review is from: Doot Doot (Audio CD)
back in 1984 the CASSETTE version of this album included their best recorded material originally found on their first two 12" singles. tracks such as "Matters of the Heart (dun diffrunt)" "You are a Hoover (dun diffrunt)" "Hold Me Mother (extended)" and "Doot Doot (extended)" are all absent from this cd, which makes it very incomplete and less than impressive. although the last track mentioned above can be found on some compilation cd's, the other three are still unobtainable anywhere, and could be lost forever if nobody does anything about it..

5.0 out of 5 stars How did this go under my radar for so long? (pun intended), May 26, 2007
This review is from: Doot Doot (Audio CD)
WOW! This is fantastic! How did I miss this great band for so long? Part Primitive Radio Gods and part Yes. I love this stuff!

I only ever knew Freur for Hey Ho, which I heard in 1991, before the internet, and then only on alternative radio stations. One the internet took off, I really should have looked them up. I didn't even notice Doot in Vanilla Sky. Where was my head? I usually look for the music in the credits. Now I'm looking for all their music.

I especially like Doot Doot, My Room, All Too Much, and the Devil and Darkness.

If you like Simple Minds, the Cure, Yes, PRG, Kansas, ... You'll love this.
