4.0 out of 5 stars A magnificent album!, March 31, 2000
By
Sam Theiner (Pittsburgh, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Doot Doot (Audio CD)
I stole this album (on vinyl, natch) from my brother in about 1984 (I was 10) and I distinctly remember hearing Matters of the Heart as well as Doot-Doot (the song) on pop radio at the time. I listened to that album all the time; it was a favorite for a long time. Years later, I completely forgot about it. I just accidentally ran across this reissue the other day in a record store; boy, did it take me back. I still love this album. The production and arrangements are sheer poetry, as well as being viscerally exciting; the same goes for the near-literary-quality lyrics. The singer's voice (whoever it was, there are no performance credits) is delightfully vivid; same goes for some subtly expressive synth work. The only two reasons I'm not giving this CD 5 stars are: 1)the mastering is awful. It sounds like this disc was pressed directly from the vinyl-compressed tapes. 2)the two bouncy-rhythmed "bonus tracks" (b-sides from the singles?), while not horrible, do not fit in with the generally "lusty" atmosphere of the rest of the album (there is an undercurrent of S&M, or some such, to some of the lyrics; was I aware of that when I was 10? Ask my therapist! 8-) With those two caveats in mind, I heartily recommend this album to music fans of any sort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Karl Hyde and crew have always known where they are, September 19, 2003
This review is from: Doot Doot (Audio CD)
No matter the ridiculousness of the music (be it pop, rock, techno, dub, house, industrial, new wave, psychedelic -no particular order), This band from Screen Gemz, Freur, and both the pop and techno versions of Underworld, created some of the coolest and refreshing music that stands the test of time. Albeit recent fans out there now only have ever heard the newer Underworld (1992 - 2003), it's nice that us old school hardcore fans are still here, nods Bill Skulley. Those old tapes and vinyls are worn out!!!

The re-release of Freur's Doot Doot was a wonderful surprise as most of their stuff is super rare. It's a truly extraordinary cd for it's time and reminds me of how much I truly adored Duran Duran's Rio when I first listened to it. Karl Hyde just has a rapturous voice to listen to, not unlike Simon LeBon.

When the Dubnobasswithmyheadman cd came out in '94 I was totally thrilled they didn't give up, and honestly I was ecstatic with the album...a most brilliant album...one that will never leave this boy's cd player.

I RECOMMEND ANYTHING BY KARL HYDE AND CO.
