5.0 out of 5 stars Your salvation from nu-metal crap!, August 11, 2005
This review is from: Dopesick (Audio CD)
Wow. I bought this CD on a whim after reading a blurb about it in Blender. It has blown my mind! Lost your job? Girlfriend left you? Eyehategod are there for you.

I've gotten bored with overtly costumed Euro metal (Cradle, Dimmu Borgir, Children of Bodom) and growl-laden Death metal (everyone else). That's why Eyehategod is a revelation. No choral breaks or violins. No Cannibal Corpse-type grunting. Just pure aggression. From the opening scream and breaking glass of "My Name Is God (I Hate You)", these guys have you by the throat. No melody, no strict musical form, just the purity of a riff and a scream. Feedback is used to its utmost. Eyehategod is so merciless with their audible limits, they make The Melvins sound like Yes.

They always manage to stay heavy, even when they never move above mid-tempo. I'm not too familiar with the "sludge" metal genre, but these guys are just awesome. Be warned - this isn't the kind of music you're gonna be able to turn people onto. "It sounds like it was recorded in a garage." "This guy just screams all the time." Screw 'em, it's good to have heaviness for its' own sake. Hold this CD tight, and it will take you through the darkness.

If you are curious about Eyehategod, I strongly recommend this CD. Buy it, play it in your car, and by the third track you'll be screaming into your windshield and running over children. Ah, what fun....

Great CD tray photo, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just about as misanthropic as one can get, December 29, 2008
By
This review is from: Dopesick (Reis) (Audio CD)
In 1996, metal, alternative, and nu-metal were all huge. Despite all this, EyeHateGod had no chance of commercial appeal. The New Orleans sludge metal quintet were just about as misanthropic, nihilistic, and flat out depressing as one could get. For a mainstream who thought Korn sounded as if they were going through a lot of pain, EyeHateGod would no doubt send them into an emotional turmoil. The guitar work and riffing were always stretched out to the point of no return, almost like Black Flag played at a tenth the speed. The bass droned ad infinite, making the listener stuck in the group's living hell. The drummer is always in the background, but aware of the right speeds for every song. The vocal work by Michael D. Williams is one of the most easily distinctive in all of metal. Metal is a genre known for often indecipherable vocals, but Williams are possibly the most unintelligible out of them all. Seriously, it sounds as if the man is speaking in his own painful language most of the time.

"Dopesick", while not my favorite album from the group (that'd be "Take As Needed For Pain"), is probably their definitive statement. It's certainly the most well recorded, as many of their earlier records are hampered by poor sound quality. As for the songs themselves, they're what one can expect from the group, with occasionally a catchy riff surfacing here and there (particularly the Sabbath-like "Dixie Whiskey"). Again, Williams' vocals are obscure as always, but song titles such as "My Name Is God (I Hate You)" and "Anxiety Hangover" give the listener an idea of what hes talking about. Ultimately, this is the kind of metal record which separates the men from the boys. Mall core poseurs wearing Mudvayne and Disturbed tee-shirts will be left terrified at the recording. However, those with a taste for the more extreme sides of American metal or even old school hardcore really need to own this. Its one of the best metal albums of the 90s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sludge True To The Core..., June 28, 2002
This review is from: Dopesick (Audio CD)
I have to admit, I have not always been an Eyehategod fan. But after listening tho Down's 'Nola' (one of the finest recrodings ever) I had to check them out. So I bought this. Holy Sh-t. This is just perfection in every sense of the word. This has got to be one of the best records of all time. The guitars, the vocals, the bass, the everything about this band is just perfect. Though I have bought 3 more Eyehategod albums since this one, they don't quite mach up with it. I mean songs like "Zero Nowhere" (my personal favorite), "Methanphetamine", "Ruptured Heart Theory" and "Non Conductive Negative Reasoning" are some of the best metal recordings of all time. There is no way in hell that this album should be passed up. I would recomend this to everybody. Rock on...

5.0 out of 5 stars GOOD OL' LOUISIANA SLUDGE, May 13, 2001
By
This review is from: Dopesick (Audio CD)
I got this CD about 3 years ago and everytime I listen to it it never fails to impress me. This was the first CD I purchased by EHG and it most definately wasn't my last. I also have to say that this CD influenced my bass playing big time. This album is drenched in negativity, not to mention feedback. Mike Williams screams like he's in serious pain, both emotional and physical and judging from the autobiographical lyrics printed in the liner notes he just might be. Both Jimmy Bower and Brian Patton lay down the southern/sludge riffs that have become the trademark for EyeHateGod. Vince LeBlanc, makes the riff all the more solid by adding superfat basslines. Joe LaCaze keeps time with excellent drumming that can stop and start on a dime. If there was a story behind this album it would be that these songs are the last few thoughts that flash through a mans mind before he puts a gun in his mouth and pulls the trigger. If you're looking for something happy and upbeat then go listen to Blink 182; however if you want a trip into parts of the mind you'd rather not venture to then pick this album up, you won't be dissapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most CATHARTIC Metal album ever!, October 8, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dopesick (Reis) (Audio CD)
Bought this CD cold a few years back. It has twisted me beyond all recognition! Lost your job? Girlfriend left you? Eyehategod are there for you.

I've gotten bored with overtly costumed Euro metal (Cradle, Dimmu Borgir, Children of Bodom) and growl-laden Death metal (everyone else). That's why Eyehategod is a revelation to me. No choral breaks or violins. No Cannibal Corpse-type grunting in front of anonymous blastbeats. Just pure aggression, but with such a slow groove that you're awaiting the release of Michael William's screams. From the opening scream and breaking glass of "My Name Is God (I Hate You)", these guys have you by the throat. No melody, no strict musical form, just the purity of a good riff and some shredded vocal cords. Feedback is used to its utmost. Eyehategod is so merciless with their audible limits, they make The Melvins sound like Electric Light Orchestra.

They always manage to stay heavy, even when they never move above mid-tempo. I'm not too familiar with the "sludge" metal genre out of the South, but Eyehategod have become my heroes. Be warned - this isn't the kind of music you're gonna be able to turn people onto. "It sounds like it was recorded in a garage." "This guy just screams all the time." Screw 'em, it's good to have heaviness for its' own sake. Hold this CD tight, and it will take you through the darkness.

Now, I updated to this remaster a little while ago - my old copy was played to death. I haven't had a good stereo to compare the sound quality, but given that it was recorded only 12 years ago and the kind of music it is, this version sounds great. The main thing you see on this is three more tracks - "Depress", "Peace Thru War (alt. version)" and the "Dopesick Jam" (my personal favorite). They are morsels added onto a already satisfying steak. My only complaint with this set is that with the restyling of the album art, the old photo under the CD tray is gone. That was a nice vintage bondage shot.

Anyway, buy this album - it is GLORIOUSLY HEAVY! Play it in your car, and by the third track you'll be screaming into your windshield and running over children. Ah, what fun....

Hailing from New Orleans, Eyehategod play heavy as hell, sludge metal. I love the bass on this album. The vocals take getting used to at first, but i dont think any other vocals would fit their sound. Definitley pick up this album if you like Down, Crowbar, or Soilent Green

5.0 out of 5 stars Preaching the "End Time" message, August 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Dopesick (Audio CD)
Heavy, dark, manic? Hells yeah! Laryngitis vocals, sludgy guitars, bombastic drums. A celebration of depression and alienation. Producer Billy Anderson captured the true beauty of this New Orleans super-group's feedback assault. This recording even rivals their insane live performances. EHG does what with music middle-America thinks Marilyn Manson does. No cheesy goth-disco here, just good hate rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars My first Eyehategod album, July 4, 2005
By
This review is from: Dopesick (Audio CD)
I just got Eyehategod's "Dopesick" a couple of weekends back, and it's the first one I ever got from this great band. This album is 12 tracks of pure slow driven, punishing kick ass sludge metal from beginning to end. Every song on here is great. On this album you've got awesome screaming vocals from Mike Williams, punishing guitar riffs courtesy of Jimmy Bower and Brian Patton, haunting bass lines from Vince LeBlanc, and good drumming from Joe LaCaze. This album starts off with my favorite song on here "My Name is God (I Hate You)" which starts off with some slow heavy riffs. I like when the song breaks into a little thrash mid through, and then changes back to slow tempo. Other songs on here I like include "Dixie Whisky", "Ruptured Heart Theory", "Anxiety Hangover", and "Broken Down But Not Locked Up". There's also some really good short songs on here including "Dogs Holy Life", "Peace Thru War (Thru Peace And War)", "Methamphetamine", and "Non Conductive Negagtive Reasoning" all clocking in at 1 minute +. Another favorite song on here is "Zero Nowhere". The trademark sludge riffs from Jimmy and Brian, and Mike's vocals on there will just leave you mesmerized. Anyways this whole album is just fantastic, and if you into Eyehategod, sludge metal, or just good music in general, you can't go wrong here with "Dopesick". Enjoy!

themetalbeast's ratings:

1. My Name Is God (I Hate You): 5/5

2. Dogs Holy Life: 5/5

3. Masters Of Legalized Confusion: 5/5

4. Dixie Whisky: 5/5

5. Ruptured Heart Theory: 5/5

6. Non Conductive Negative Reasoning: 5/5

7. Lack Of All Most Everything: 5/5

8. Zero Nowhere: 5/5

9. Methamphetamine: 5/5

10. Peace Thru War (Thru Peace And War): 5/5

11. Broken Down But Not Locked Up: 5/5

12. Anxiety Hangover: 5/5

4.0 out of 5 stars Dirty, Sludgey, Angry and Good, May 31, 2005
This review is from: Dopesick (Audio CD)
Eyehategod are a brutal band, but not brutal in the sense of creating really fast Grindcore or really Technical Death Metal..Eyehategod are brutal in the way they carry themselves, and their overall don't give a fukk attitude. It comes across loud and clear in and out of every song on this CD, not to mention their other CD's. It certainly gives it an 'edge'..a feeling of hatred. Aggression, even frustration, seems to pertain mainly for Eyehategod's music, underneath all those riffs that sound so dirty and so cool.

Eyehategod's music can be described as hate-filled, chaotic, stoner, redneck Metal..Although all of those things in my opinion (With the term 'redneck' not being an insult, although it probably comes across as one), i still feel they're pretty talented. Jimmy Bower, some Metal fans might know, has been in Crowbar and plays in the Southern-Metal super group Down.

This band would appeal mainly to fans of Down and Crowbar, and like a previous reviewer stated, to fans of Soilent Green as well. Also Sixty Watt Shaman, Acid Bath and Anal C*nt fans would get something out of this. I believe, if you're opened minded enough and want something really hardcore and dirty, you'll enjoy Eyehategod. This CD is a great place to start.
