Sociologists with an eye toward western culture tend to agree that American society fails to provide its adolescent males with a defining rite of passage into manhood. My experience was somewhat different than the norm in that my dad presented me with a Dopp kit when I turned 12. He told me that it was just like the one he carried during his tours of duty in the military. I felt ten feet tall and couldn't have been more proud. And although I didn't start shaving until several years later, that little Dopp kit was always the first thing I packed in preparation for my annual trek to Boy Scout camp.

Sadly, my original Dopp was lost somewhere in a series of relocations over the years, and although a replacement was sought for some time after that, the search proved fruitless until a month ago. While surfing Amazon, I found a Dopp Jr., and immediately placed an order. When I took it out of the package less than a week later, I felt just as proud as I did forty years ago. The materials and workmanship are still flawless, and in an age of synthetic virtual existence, it's a real comfort to know that some things never change.
