This review is from: Doppler: Concerto for Two Flutes and Orchestra (Audio CD)
In a recent quest to add flute compositions to my library, I ran across this CD. Do you find it difficult to find romantic flute pieces? It seems much was written for the flute in the baroque and classical periods, but the 1800's, it seems much less. The first five pieces are flute fantasies with the "pastorale hongroise" being the only one written for 1 flute. The remainder are for 2 flutes. From the fantasy pieces, tracks 2, 3, and 5, I believe are the best. The final work, the two flute concerto, is the best piece on the CD. It's very Mendelssohnish. Each mvt. is well written. The orchestration compliments the soloists very nicely. The performance and sound is very good and NAXOS does the Dopplers justice. If you are searching for romantic period flute, search no further. I highly recommend this CD and can't believe I am the first to review it. These are great forgotten works. |
