Where are we going? Clap! Clap! Clap! - CRAZY!!!!!!!,
By Amanda Richards (Georgetown, Guyana) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Dora the Explorer - Map Adventures (DVD)
Due to inclement weather, I found myself housebound with a two year old (not mine) and an almost four year old (mine). With apologies to Dr. Seuss, it was too wet to go out and too cramped to stay in, but we had to make the most of it.
Fortunately, this DVD was on top of the pile, and it was an instant hit with both boys. In no time at all they were singing along with Dora, Boots, Backpack and Map, and enjoying participating in the activities. This DVD has four adventures, each involving Dora and her friends following a map, finding clues and overcoming obstacles. It's a learning experience hidden in a fun cartoon, as Dora stares at you with her huge brown eyes, while talking about colors, counting, encouraging problem solving and introducing some Spanish words. It should have something of interest for ages one to five, without ever being boring. For adults it's a different matter after you've heard it the first five times or so, as the repetitive nature of the songs and activities slowly drills a hole in your skull, exposing every nerve ending to the strident "I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the maaaaaap" and "Backpack, Backpack, Backpack, Backpack..." Anyway, the price of a pair of earplugs and the inconvenience of having to schedule a lobotomy is a fair trade for keeping the kids from going stir crazy and fighting each other, especially when you hear them using Spanish words and watch them having fun learning. Just go with the flow, and join in yelling "SALTA" while you jump over the imaginary watermelons rolling through your living room. Amanda Richards, January 27, 2005

Great collection of Dora videos,

We bought this for our 2 year old son who loves Dora. It's the only show we really let him watch (to limit his TV time), and this video is a great alternative for the days he's missed the TV version, or when it's just a video kind of day. Everyday he asks to watch it, and we've now seen each of the 4 episodes on it, about 100 times (or so it seems), and he still loves it. If you've never seen Dora, the series is great for boosting language skills! We'll be giving this and other Dora videos as gifts for upcoming birthdays! (My son loves these more than he ever liked Baby Einstein)

Two Out of Four Ain't Good,

There are actually four episodes of Dora the Explorer on this DVD, but hitting "Play All" in the main menu only plays two of them, the other two are burried way down in sub-menus. If you select "Play All" from the main menu, I wish it really would! The four episodes on this DVD are typical of the episodes on TV, so if your kid likes those, they'll like this DVD.

Thank goodness they finally came out with another DVD Dora option! My child adores this brunette adventurer. Before this DVD, my only option was the Nick Jr. holiday compilation, YIKES! "Dora" was my daughter's second word. She has been enchanted with the show since a baby. Now that she's almost two, the love affair is as strong as ever. The selection of epidsodes is nicely themed, and you can expect your usual fare of learning lessons, whimsical songs, and silly smiles. We watch the DVD and then do something fun afterwards: make a map, pretend with capes, sing songs, etc. It's great fun. Highest recommendation! ENJOY!

I ordered this for my VERY active 2 1/2 year old nephew. My brother (single dad in school) was hoping for about an hour of good study time - he ended up with 3 solid hours as little "Trev" watched this video through almost 4 times!!! He loved it. The shipping was FAST and the video was in great shape. Thanks!

We Love Dora!,
This review is from: Dora the Explorer - Map Adventures [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This newer Dora video has all that you have come to expect from the series. These two episodes are intertwined in that the second one begins right where the first one ended. The continuity is an interesting change for little ones to experience. The numbers 4-8 and the colors red ("rojo"), blue, green, white, orange, yellow ("amarillo") and polka dots are all covered. In the first episode Map is obscounded by a bird who mistakes Map for a stick while searching for nesting supplies. Dora and Boots are left to make their own map to find their lost friend. Dora and Boots travel through a colorful butterfly garden, a corn field maze, and finally to Tallest Mountain where they are reunited with Map. Children will delight in needing to shout "salta!" and jump over tumbling watermelons as they come "rollling toward them" down the mountain. In the second episode, Map becomes a super hero with super strength and "special effects powers" to help Dora and Boots find their way (through a jungle of spiders and snakes, and a river of snapping crocodiles) to Doras' house for the super surprise.

My daughter loves this DVD. I like the educational skills it gives her with counting and colors as well as language skills. I think Dora is an excellent addition to the children's educational characters. My favorite is she is Latina and so adorable. "We Did It!" :)
