a passionate, eclectic, sound--from marachi to heavy metal,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dorado (Audio CD)
I have always liked groups that can play a variety of styles, and mix or create their own sound. Aterciopelados did that on this albumn. They also included a number of themes into their lyrics--sex, anger, adolescent alienation, police brutality, anti-imperialism--which deal with urban reality in Colombia.

Exceptionally Good,

This is above all their best work to date. Their 3rd and 4th cd's are good, but do not have the same energy that this cd has. The songs are wonderful, even the ehatbreak songs like "bollero Falaz". Go out and get it!

Best In Show,

I like to fansy myself bit of an expert in terms of spanish rock, and for me no one beats Aterciopelados. Their mix of styles into an easy to listen fusion is what music is meant to be, and this El Dorado is in my opinion the best example of it. Although, La Pipa De La Paz and Gozo Poderoso are also excellent, the songs in El Dorado are eclectic and intelligent, without losing site of the fun of rock. From the straight rock of "Florecita Rokera", to the sweetly ironic "Cosas De La Vidad", to the plain fun of "Mujer Gala", this CD is jam packed with some of the best music in any genre.

May have been a sensation in its time, cheesy and dated now.,

I got this CD back in 1995 from an online friend who wanted me to hear what this band was about. Though the words were rather stupid (rhyming "vacas" with "estacas" comes to mind) the music wasn't so bad. It was a fusion of American rock and Colombian folk music, more or less. Cheesy and infantile, primitive and laughable, it had its moments of charm. I saw this band open for Soda Stereo in 1996, and - I swear - since I never bothered to read the credits of the booklet, I thought the singer was a rather plain looking man resembling a thin and wasted Morrissey. It was to my surprise 20 minutes into the show to realize this was an amazingly ugly and totally un-feminine woman at the mike. There were a lot of colombian girls screaming at the top of their lungs the Estaca song, which apparently for all its silliness, it may have meant something at one point to all these lonely women, coming from a rail thin thing. I thought the show was as predictable (along with all the typical "latino rockero" cliches which may partly explain why mullets in men are still popular in Argentina), as forgettable - except for those screaming colombian girls reminiscent of the Beatles at Shea Stadium or Menudo in Mexico. The album has at best 3 decent songs, but the rest is mere filler. There is another band also popular with Colombians, Ekhymosis, that never really got off the ground except for those patriotic or stupid enough to shell out $15 for their CDs, and whose biggest and only hit "La Tierra" after 6 studio albums plus 1 MTV acoustic, only shows that love for one's homeland will drive you to do really dumb things. Try to get the hit songs from this album in some "greatest hits" album or a various artists compilation as the album is not really worth your money or mine.

still best one by this great group,
By A Customer

Though they've made a few more CDs after this one, and those others are good, this one is still the best, the edgiest, the most eclectic. _Pipa_ really only has a few songs that really get me going ("Cosita Seria" rocks, but it's really the only one on the disc) and _Caribe_ is more consistent than _Pipa_ but still not as heavy, groovy, punky, melodic, folky (yes, all those adjectives apply to the same CD!) as _El Dorado_. I should add that Echeverri's lyrics are now and again a little too politically goofy for me (frankly, in my view, this world could get along just fine without political pronouncement and grandstanding from musicians, but it's a vain hope that we might get all of them to just worry about their music and shut up about things they don't know much about), but the music is ALWAYS cool and her voice rules.

I loved Caribe Atomico. So I bought this one. Disappointing. I don't have the patience to dig up the comparisons, but I've heard nearly all of this before.
