Format: Comic
This story is about a boy named Nobi Nobita. Nobita is the kind of boy that gets bullied, is the last one picked, and does not do well in school. He's a shy boy who wishes he was well liked among his peers and wished he did better at school.

Because of Nobita's poor performance in school and bad luck, when he goes into the work force his family becomes poor. Even his great, great...great grand-children are poor because of the huge unpaid debt Nobita left behind. Nobita's great-great grandson from the future, Sewashi, comes up with an idea to deal with the problem. Sewashi sends Doraemon to the past using a time machine. The plan is Doraemon will help Nobita become a responsible and successful adult so that Sewashi's family will not be poor.

Doraemon is a cat-like-robot. He was built by an engineer that wanted to create a robot that would be a friend to children who did not fit in and had no friends. Doraemon gets his name because he loves dorayaki (a Japanese snack that is like a pancake sandwich with red bean paste inside).

Doraemon and Nobita become good friends. Doraemon pulls out different objects out his pocket (that looks like a pouch on his belly) and saves Nobita every time he is in a pinch at school or with the bully. Doraemon's pocket is 4-dimentional, which means anything and everything can fit inside. Each episode of the comic is based on Nobita's pinch with something and Doraemon coming to the rescue with a different tool from the future.

Doraemon occasionally becomes concerned with Nobita's dependence on him. Doraemon's intention is that his tools will help Nobita grow up to be a responsible person, but Nobita often uses Doraemon's tools to shortcut his problems.

Tentomushi Comic(45 volumes in total) has stories of Japanese-language original version of Doraemon better known as THE GADGET CAT FROM THE FUTURE. There's no full-translation of Doraemon into English. Shogakukan English-Japanese version 10 volumes in total include only about a quarter of stories original Japanese version has.

Vol.1 has 15 stories written during 1970-71. (Note: English titles from non-translated stories are by the Author of the review and not the official ones).
ALL THE WAY FROM THE FUTURE...See the Gadget Cat from the Future Vol.1
Doraemon-no-Daiyogen(Your Future is Doomed): Doraemon tries to prevent Nobita from getting involved in traffic accident which he has foreseen.

Furudogu Kyoso(How to Win an Antique Competition): Nobita tries to win the game in which the winner is the person who can show the oldest antique. Rivaling Nobita is Suneo whose family has a large number of antique collections.
Peko Peko Batta...A grasshopper shaped device makes anyone repent what he or she has done wrong.
Gosenzo-sama Ganbare(Could my Ancestor Have Been a Lord?)...Nobita and Doraemon visits 16th century Japan and help Nobita's ancestor be appraised by the warlord, hoping that he eventually would become a lord.

Format: Comic
Second volume of Tentomushi Comics written in Japanese contains the selected stories of Doraemon episodes during 1970-74. Volume one indeed are full of "best of best" early Doraemon stories so much so the second volume to me is like listeng to Disc two of Essential Journey. Indeed selection of the material written during 1970-74 are really carefully done and what you can read in English-language edition may be only 10 percent of them.
Note: English Titles of Untranslated episodes are by the author of the review and not the official ones.

2.ROBOKO GA AISHITERU(My Robot Girlfriend Loves Me)
The concept of beautiful android with super-human strength as a girlfriend is one of the popular themes in current "Moe" manga. But when Fujiko wrote the story in early 70s it was still rare. Heroines in comic books were supposed to be rescued and not the other way around. The author of Dr. Slump, Akira Toriyama(Dragon Ball) acknowledged in recent interview that the character setting of Arare-chan beautiful girl android with super-strength might have come from this Doraemon episode. This episode is highly appreciated by younger generation of manga fans who also love warrior-girl heroines such as Naussica in Nausicaa of the Valley of the WindRei Ayanami in
