Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
In Dora's Backpack, Nickelodeon's popular Latina heroine needs to return eight books to the library before it closes. With Map leading the way, Dora and her friend Boots the monkey will make use of all the handy items stored in Backpack to cross the Troll Bridge, get through the Icky-Sticky Sand, cross Turtle River, and get to the library in time. But beware, because Swiper the fox is always lurking. Dora's Backpack is based on the television episode and teaches problem solving, map reading, counting, and one Spanish word. (Ages 2 to 5) --David Horiuchi

5.0 out of 5 stars For 5 and up, February 7, 2003
By A. Sierra "Ari" (New York, New York USA) - See all my reviews
I personally liked this book. It really lets children interact with the storyline, which is to get Dora safely to the library so she can return her books. Dora asks the reader for help in finding articles in her backpack that will help her accomplish this goal.

Overall, this book was a little too advanced for my soon-to-be three year-old cousin. Be sure to buy this book for a child who's older, because it's not a hardcover book (a little one will rip this easily) and it might be a little difficult for a toddler to interact with the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book, December 11, 2002
By D. Cowden "ddcowden" (Grand Prairie, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
My 2 year old is a big Dora fan and this book is requested at bedtime every night. It is very interactive (there are lots of questions in it like "where is boots?" or "Can you count the books?" ) It is a good inexpensive book for any Dora fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Go Dora Go! Counting, Problem Solving and more, October 10, 2005
In this adventure, Dora sets off to return her library books. If you don't remember the television show, the obstacles include not knowing how to get there, the Grumpy Old Troll, a storm cloud, icky-sticky mud, crossing Turtle River, and a closed door at the library.

Most of these obstacles are solved with the help of Backpack and your child. The Map shows the way, and Backpack has the supplies to solve most of the problems if they only could figure out what to use. What Backpack can't do, you child can, by helping to point out what to use.

Pros:
What I like about this book is that there is alot to learn. Children can learn all about maps, for example. How they are representational of real terrain and places.

It also lets you and your children practiced rhyming. The Troll's quiz, for example, begs the question of what rhymes with `guizzers'? Scissors!

And the Backpack sequences lets children look at a collection of items, recognize their use, and then select the appropriate item. Sort of like, Problem Solving 101.

Also, there are many opportunities to count throughout the book, though the most obvious chance comes at the end when Dora counts to make sure that all of the books are there.

And finally, one of my favorite things is that the story is about the Library. Dora is associated with books and reading, thus setting a good example.

Four Stars. One of the better Dora books. In this one your child has plenty of opportunity to answer questions and help out their pals. Counting, Problem Solving, and more all at a good price.
