Caymmi is a Brazilian Family of Music Masters,
By
This review is from: Dori Caymmi (Audio CD)
Some artists like Andy Williams loved Dorival Caymmi for his traditional Brazilian sambas. Some like Mark Murphy and Johnny Mathis love Dori Caymmi, son of Dorival, for his modern harmonies, arrangements and particular vocals. If you search for a good reference in Brazilian Modern Song, this is a good bet. BTW, his sister Nana Caymmi sings one track in the CD. Also a master singing.

An almost forgotten gem in the Brazilian music realm,
This review is from: Dori Caymmi (Audio CD)
This CD is one of my favorites. The music is a comforting blend of Brazilian and jazz. The songs are very simple yet its sometimes the simplicity of the songs that make them so heartfelt and warm. I actually kind of consider this more of a winter album because I often listen to it more during the winter because of it's very lonely evening sound. 1993s Kicking Cans is warmer in sound and even better but this 1988 gem must never be out of print permanently. It's hard for me to describe how much this album has meant to me all these years because I grew up listening to this album as well as Kicking Cans and because of this I would never ever give these albums up not even for a million dollars. They are that precious. This album while it came out WAAAYYY back in 1988 doesn't sound dated at all even less than music that came out five years afterwards. Dori Caymmi is a Brazilian master at the acoustic guitar and I wish he would,ve had more notice here in the US considering how awful pop music has become here lately. Go and get this CD immediately when it becomes available again in Amazon or if you find it at a CD store. Its worth the hard search. And get Kicking Cans too. They are both incredible works of art.

If you like brazilian music, and love acoustic guitars and breezy tropical/soothing-like music, this is the best album you can find; it does not get any better than this; do yourself a favor, purchase this CD immediately once it comes back to availability.

One of the best brazilian music CDs,

Dori Caymmi is one of the best artists from Brazil. In this CD he is spetacular, with marvelous melodies. More than a brazilian artist, he is a world one. What are you waiting to get all his CDs (all excelent ones)? Better than him, only his great father, Dorival.

Surpises in store for you!,

Melody and rhythm are my weaknesses in Brazilian music, but then I do not speak or read Portugese. This among the "classic 4" is his penultimate creation. Dori chooses the great Don Grusin plus a who's who in Brazilian music to compile a "don't stop playing"cd. 1st surprise for me was the little mentioned addition of Sergio Mendes (Laporace's husband incidently) on Velho Piano handling the synths. 2nd surprise is that Mendes produced it...for not since his producing Edu Lobo for A&M have I heard a more strong dedication to the artist (Caymmi)in a Mendes production.
Then among all the pheonimonal songs, I hear my 3rd surpise..The River. For me that best song on the disc, which is loaded with too many good songs..did I say that? You might also try to find, probably in vain, the Mendes Brazil '86 disc. There is a sumptuous version of The River on there I've never heard surpassed, but this self titled effort is exquisite and will have you hitting the repeat button more than once. Surprise number 4 is the rich voicing Nana Caymmi gives to Velho Piano and the rich rhythm the ending takes. Sadly, his body is gone from this temporary life, but this gem is yours to listen everyday. A must buy!

I used to find Dori too mellow for me but seeing him live I gained an appreciation for his great rhythm guitar playing. he is one of the great masters of Brazilian guitar. As usual I prefer the upbeat numbers but this is a good record.

This Is The One,

Don't you love it when the album's art work matches the music? Or when there's a unity to the album that makes every cut seem like just a different version of the same beautiful song? Both are the case here. Excellent use of synthesizers in what feels like very "organic" music. These performances are so powerful that they have the ability to come creeping into my consciousness and become part of another musician's live performance. Like fellow customer reviewer Mr. Carr, this album holds a special place in my life & I wouldn't surrender MY copy for all the cafe in Brasil.
