Book Description

December 23, 2009
Doris Danger is a photo-journalist who as a teen was abducted by a giant monster. Ever since, she's had a burning desire to prove the existence of giant monsters, but has as yet been unable to prove her beliefs and snap that indisputable photograph. Along the way, she has met many others who believe, as she does, in giant monsters. She has managed to convince many, foremost of them, her boyfriend, former astronaut Steve Wonder. And she has met many who doubt, try to disprove, or even lie, manipulate, and cover up evidence. Doris Danger crosses the X-Files with the famous Lee/Kirby giant monster comics (with a little bit of Godzilla thrown in for good measure) to create a fun and exciting read.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Doris is caught in the crossfire of apocalyptic beasts and dystopian authorities and wise-yet-cryptic sages and simply-crass conspiracy nuts; lost on the road between the repressed fever dreams of the Eisenhower era and the rampant hallucinations of the counterculture; macheteing her way from perils-of-Pauline pre-feminism to the faroff era of Ripley and Steinem. But get entranced by enough of the twisted plots and crazed spectacle she encounters and you may find yourself no longer wanting to escape. --ComicCritique.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant parody/celebration of classic monster comics!, December 28, 2009

This review is from: Doris Danger Volume One: Giant Monster Stories (Paperback)
Chris Wisnia's Doris Danger comics were a highlight of the classic "Tabloia" comic. Terrifying creatures such as Fuggabluh and Choopeepoo battle the "bloodthirsty, uneducated government lapdogs" (the Army!), while the MLA (Monster Liberation Army!) does their level best to ensure the monsters' survival. All the while, the intrepid and, (let's face it) beautiful "Ace Photo Journalist" Doris Danger finds herself caught in the crossfire. The stories are a deft mixture of parody and satire, tackling everything from classic giant monster comics (particularly those of Jack "King" Kirby) to modern politics. And as a bonus, there are some great pin-ups of giant monsters as interpreted by comics legends like Dick Ayers, Mike Mignola, Sam Keith, Peter Bagge, Al Feldstein, Dave Gibbons, and Art Adams. It's a real treat to have all these great comics in one convenient package-- very highly recommended!
