3.0 out of 5 stars Dear Doris Day
The life of Doris Day certainly was filled with ups and downs, and A.E. Hothcner does a good job in sharing this with the reader. It was also insightful having some of Doris's close friends (Rock Hudson, Gordon MacRae,Jimmy Stuart, James Garner), and family (mom and son Terry Melcher) share the experiences they had with her.

Doris Day obviously was a fine...

5.0 out of 5 stars Doris Day Her Own Story, January 24, 2000

The book was written in a way that made you feel as if you were listening to her talk to you in your living room. I was surprised that her life was not as the girl next door, full of sweet and lovely living. Her being able to have such difficulties with the men in her life and still survive with compassion and enthusiasm shows how well grounded she is. What a wonderful person. This book was a great read and touched my heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars Doris Day Her Own Story, December 12, 1999
By

I read this book many years ago. I was very touched by Doris Day's love for animals. I wrote a letter to her telling her how much I liked the book and how much happiness my own dog added to my life. I enclosed a picture of me laughing while my dog, Ginger, was licking my face. Doris actually wrote to me! She sent a postcard with a typed note on it. One line said: "Kiss Ginger on her nose for me." It was signed: Love, D.D. It was raining the day I got the card. A raindrop made one spot of the card blurry. However, from that point forward we have always referred to Doris Day as: "Ginger's Aunt Doris." Ginger is now gone, but the letter from Doris is a great part of her canine legacy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabby. The woman is a star, February 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Doris Day: Her Own Story (Paperback)
Can't believe I'm the first person to review this. I *know* I'm not the first person to read it. What can I say - Ms. Day - not all apple pie. Not that she likes it anyway. If you're a doris fan, then this is a great book. It's touching, down to earth (as is the great lady herself) and is inspiring to say the least. After all this woman has had to put up with, she's still the one making our days full of sunshine. Read this and see if you don't admire her. Dare you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read about a great lady - Doris Day, April 28, 2008

This book is a entertaining read, as well as inspirational. Doris Day has to be one of the most
admired women on this planet. She has seemed to never get sucked into the vapid world of "stardom",
and has seemed to keep an eye on what is really important. Her work with the Doris Day Animal League,
and the many animals she has helped - is awesome!
The author does a good job of letting the reader know about Doris Day, and meaningful events
in her life. While I was disappointed in her tv show that she kept changing the stars (she started out a
widowed mom - and somehow the kids disappeared after a few seasons - as well as the charming farm, which
I felt was a terrible move on the show) - you come to realize how much her life was in a turmoil during the
period of the shows creation - her real-life husband had just died, and her financial empire had been
swindled from her - but just like Doris - she takes it head on - and gets justice!

5.0 out of 5 stars Doris Day: Her Own Story, August 4, 2009

This review is from: Doris Day: Her Own Story (Paperback)
Excellent book and truly autobiography in her own words. I know because in early 70s I transcribed some of Hotchner's interview tapes for the book, and she was as charming and articulate, and funny, and sad in the telling as her story unfolds here. Great personality and it was joy to work on it. Lost my copy years ago, so was delighted to find a copy again on Amazon.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, July 27, 2008

I'm a fan of Doris Day (who isn't)and I recently finished watching the entire series of the Doris Day show. It was great to learn more about this woman and separate the characters that she plays from the woman. This book also includes interviews with costars, relatives and friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good biography about Doris Day., November 7, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a well-written, factual and truthfully-candid account of the life story (at least up through 1976) of one of America's most beloved actresses. Interspersed with interviews from friends and colleagues and her son, the book plainly reveals that just because one succeeds in the entertainment business, doesn't mean that all aspects of one's life are going to be easy , perfect or filled with happiness. Repeatedly, the biography proves that no matter what she faced, Doris Day was (and still is) a class act in every way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doris' Own Story, October 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was interested in learning about the actual life of Doris Day. Her autobiography did a wonderful job of telling a story that was not at all pleasant. For an actress who provided so much joy to her fans she really had a difficult life. There are others who wrote about Doris, but I wanted to hear what she had to say about her experiences in life. The book was much greater than my expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and entertaining, September 28, 2011

The private side of Ms.Day's life is the contrary of that movie goers know. I do not know where she took all her smiles and good humor after all those devastating incidents in her life. You'd be surprised!
