Editorial Reviews

In addition to singing with the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd (that's her on Dark Side of the Moon ), Doris was one of the few female R&B artists of the '60s to write most of her own material. This 1963 Atlantic debut features the #3 R&B hit title track; her soulful take on Stormy Monday , plus Be Sure; Time; A School for Fools; Draw Me Closer; Trust in Me , and more!

1. What'cha Gonna Do About It?
2. Bossa Nova Blues
3. Just One Look
4. Trust in Me
5. Lazy Days (When Are You Coming Home)
6. Somewhere Along the Way
7. Draw Me Closer
8. A School for Fools
9. Be Sure
10. Somerone Ain't Right
11. Stormy Weather
12. Time

It isn’t often that you’ll see a complete CD covering the music of a legitimate One-Hit Wonder, let alone four, but in the case of Doris Troy (born Doris Elaine Higginsen in New York City on January 6, 1937) it’s understandable because this classy lady, known throughout the industry as Mama Soul, was so much more than that lone singles charts claim to national fame. For the record, that came in June/July 1963 when the self-penned Just One Look, produced by John “Gregory” Carroll, surged to # 3 R&B/# 10 Billboard Pop Hot 100 on Atlantic 2186 b/w Bossa Nova Blues.

Both sides were also part of the 1963 12-track Atlantic LP released that same year, also titled “Just One Look” (Atlantic 8088), and if all you want are both sides of her lone hit, this Collectables 2005 reformatting of that LP is your best bet as it comes with excellent sound reproduction and informative liner notes written by Al Fichera (the contents are repeated in the Comments below showing the times of each track). The only other side from the LP to emerge as a single was What’cha Gonna Do About It? (Atlantic 2206), also in 1963 (and which later reached # 37 in December 1964 in the U.K.where she was extremely popular), b/w Tomorrow Is Another Day.

On the other hand, if you wish to sample a wider array of her recorded efforts I would recommend the Kent/Ace 2011 “I'll Do Anything: The Doris Troy Anthology 1960-1996" which offers 26 tracks and much more extensive liner notes/discography and with equally-fine sound quality (be sure to read the great review by Garby Gable). The only lamentable omission (from a completists’ point of view) from among the four sides just mentioned is the B-side to her one hit, Bossa Nova Blues.

Doris Troy is locked into the Groundhog's Day repetition of oldies radio with her 1963 Top 10 hit "Just One Look." But there was more to her career than is encapsulated in that (albeit, superb) two-minute and thirty-one seconds. The daughter of a Pentecostal minister, she sang in her father's church choir before being discovered by James Brown at the church of R&B, the Apollo Theater. Her signature "Just One Look" was released by Atlantic and led to this 1963 album, combining well-selected covers (including a gospel-powered take on "Stormy Weather") with eight originals from Troy and her co-writer Gregory Carol. Troy smolders with anticipation on "Lazy Days (When Are You Coming Home)," grooves to the Latin-inflected "Bossa Nova Blues," bends blue notes for "Draw Me Closer," reads her mistreating mate the riot act on "Someone Ain't Right," and closes the album with the dramatic Ben E. King-styled "Time." Troy went on to back the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, sign to Apple for an album in 1969, and mount a musical theatrical production of her life story (which was subsequently turned into the film Mama, I Want to Sing!), but she never again found the commercial success of her very first single. Luckily, the Atlantic archives testify to the breadth of singing and songwriting talent that took root in 1963. 3-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. [©2014 Hyperbolium]

When Doris Troy signed with Apple Records in 1969, she was surprised to learn that George Harrison and the other Beatles were familiar with her music. As Doris said in 1992, "He [George] told me he had 'Just One Look' and my Atlantic album. I said, 'What! My stuff?' to which George replied, 'Yeah. We listen to it all the time!'"

This is the album that Harrison was talking about. Not only does it contain the title track, which is Doris' best-known composition (written under the pseudonym Doris Payne), a Top Ten hit in 1963, and covered by many artists, including The Hollies and Linda Ronstadt, but has 11 other selections as well, most of them co-written by Payne, along with Great American Songbook classics, such as "Stormy Weather" and "Somewhere Along The Way."

While I highly recommend the Doris Troy album on Apple, which I purchased as part of the excellent Apple Records Box Set in 2010, this earlier Atlantic album - remastered by Rhino and issued on Collectables Records - is a fine companion piece to that CD.

Doris Troy died of emphysema in 2004, no doubt because of heavy smoking, as many performers of her generation were. In addition to the Atlantic and Apple albums, there are other compilations available for those who want to explore her music further.
