an obscure but excellent collection, July 15, 2011
I happened upon this collection by chance, and I'm very grateful to have found it. These tracks are some of the most rewarding listening experiences I have ever had with Brazilian music. Considering the apparent obscurity of this collection, that's a very pleasant surprise.
I can't seem to find any reliable information about this collection. I can't verify this, but I've read a comment that these performances were recorded especially for this project. That seems a bit hard to believe, considering the epic variety of big-name talent assembled here. It would seem far more likely that this would be an "anthologization" of on-topic previously released tracks. Yet there does seem to be a certain consistency in the production values: Each track is a subtly recorded gem, never over-produced, with an emphasis on intimate acoustics. I haven't had time yet to carefully compare each track to other CDs to see if they match.
Regardless of the mysterious origins of this set, I can only say that it's worth three times the money. You could hardly find a better way to explore the vast riches of Brazilian music--and Dorival Caymmi's compositional masterwork--in a single purchase. Note, also, that this particular CD is only the first volume in a set of four total. I recommend all of them equally.
