Dorland's Pocket Medical dictionary is among the best medical dictionaries. It is nice and thick - lots of info between those covers. As a nursing student in an R.N. program it was a required reference book. 20 years later I am ordering another one because I gave my old copy to a new nursing student and I now I need it. I highly recommend it to students in the health sciences, medical coders, technicians and degreed health professionals. It would also be a good home reference for the interested layman.

This dictionary is a bad excuse for a dictionary. I just recently used this dictionary to study for finals and tried looking certain words up. I like the binding and the cover but the content of the book itself is not worth the outrageous amount I paid.

For example when I looked up diverticulitits, the definition the dictionary gave was "inflammation of the diverticulum" - come on every medical student would know that - itis means inflammation. With a definition like that I am probably skilled to publish a dictionary of my own as well too. I was expecting a definition such as this:" Diveritcular disease affects the large intestines. Pockets (diverticula) develop on the outside wall of the intestine, pockets cause blockage and when bacteria gets caught in the pockets inflammation of the diverticula develops. " Maybe that is why you can not see the inside of the dictionary on Amazon. Its done to stimulate sales based on the reviews.

After reading the review on other Dorland's dictionaries I thought this would be a good investment. I figured if Dorland produced other great dictionaries their pocket size one would be one of the best out there. It's a waste of money- if I could return a used book, I would for this dictionary is merely a waste of time. All I can tell you is it's a waste of money. Getting a cheaper version of another dictionary would be helpful. The only thing you will be getting with this dictionary is a nice paper weight- those always come in handy when studying but its not worth it for $30 something dollars. This will be the last Dorland dictionary I purchase. I learned that Mosby is the way to go. I would not recommend this dictionary for a student what so ever.
