INCREDIBLE BOOK, one flaw,
By noah@smarterwater.com (Atlanta, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Herbs (Dorling Kindersley Handbook) (Paperback)
This book is one of the very best field guides to medicinal herbs. A must have for serious herbalists of all levels. The photos are absolutely spectacular! The one flaw: the book is not easy to use as an identifier unless you are pretty sure of what the plants name is already, because the book is organized by name mainly. But, if you know the name of the plant you are looking for then there is no better book. Email the publisher telling them to reorganize this book so that it is more versatile as a field guide. The planet needs this book. I'm serious, it's that good.

this book along with "edible wild plants:a north american field guide" by thomas elias and "a field guide to medicinal plants and herbs: of eastern and central north america" by james a. duke will provide all the information necessary for positive identification. cross referencing the various photos and other information leaves no doubt.

Learn About Herbs,
By Lawrence Stone-Nilsen (Burlingame, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Herbs (Dorling Kindersley Handbook) (Paperback)
I am very interested in medicinal herbs, and I wanted to know more about them. I know from experience that DK and Eyewitness handbooks are wonderful, so I checked this book out from the library, and it was so good that I ended up buying it.The pictures are very clear, and aren't too small, as with some guide books. The text is detailed enough to tell you how to use the plant, but concise enough not to limit the number of plant species included. If you want to know more about herbs, whether for cooking or medicine, this book is essential!

A rookie heralist's "must have",
This review is from: Smithsonian Handbooks: Herbs (Smithsonian Handbooks) (Turtleback)
This is a wonderfully compact but complete, easy to use reference book. I bought one for my bookshelf and one to carry in the car for roadside identification of herbs. The color pictures are clear with all the pertinent details to make an accurate identification. Well worth the investment!

Do not hestitate to buy this book. This is a great treatment of more than 700 herbs from around the world. The indexing and helps are excellent and the picture/plates are also the best.DK Publishing has another superb title with this one and this establishes their guidebooks as A-1 in my book always.

Great visual help,
By
This review is from: Smithsonian Handbooks: Herbs (Smithsonian Handbooks) (Turtleback)
I bought the Smithsonian Handbook of Herbs because of it's exceptional picture helps to identify herbs. I have used the Peterson's Field Guide which has better written information and more herbs, but pictures are small and only in one stage of the herbs cycle. The Smithsonian Handbook for the most part shows the Herb from flowering to the seed stage, leaf formation and the whole plant, flower - fruit - seeds etc. In summary a very good visual help.

A Great Handbook,

I bought this book because I'm interested in herbal medicine. This book is great - it covers ALL kinds of things, not just herbs. While it doesn't go into detail regarding all the medical uses or how to prepare herbs, it's a great field guide to help you distinguish the herbs and plants you want to pick and use. It has full color photos!
This is a great resource if you need to identify plants, but if you're looking for how to use herbs, I suggest The Herbal-Medicine Makers Handbook by James Green.

I have been looking for a herb book for ages but there was nothing that I looked at that I was too happy with and some of the prices were absolutely ridiculous. This is an excellent book and a great price. I use it as a reference all the time. It was able to solve a few problems of "is this edible?" It really supplies you with fantastic information. Worth getting.
