4.0 out of 5 stars Dorm Room Diet - Solid Lifestyle Approach for All Really
Oz talks sense. From the first chaper, I was hooked. She suggested making a minor change for the first week. I cut back on one soft drink per day - from 3 down to 2. That was quite painless. I also took her starter tips - drink water before meals and don't eat closer than 2 hours before bedtime. Again, those were minor and didn't crimp my style.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dorm Room Diet - Solid Lifestyle Approach for All Really, October 9, 2006
This review is from: The Dorm Room Diet: The 8-Step Program for Creating a Healthy Lifestyle Plan That Really Works (Paperback)

This is not really a diet book though it deals with diet (as in what you eat). It's really about living well and making mostly good choices but not going overboard (and ultimately failing).

Oz is a vegetarian, but she said that red meat was fine in moderation. Go for only twice per week on that she suggested. I love beef, but I also like chicken and fish and can tweak that part of my meal plan. Chips are junk food, but a bowl isn't a huge deal. Just don't grab the bag and keep munching. If you have an urge for chocolate, melt some semi-sweet chocolate and dip fruits like strawberries in the chocolate. It really does satisfy that chocolate craving with smaller amounts of chocolate.

That's typical of her advice and things that I can handle and maintain.

She also talks about exercise and about supplements (meant to supplement and not take the place of good food). She's reasonable with her ideas here as well. I added some extra work out time (even jogging 5 minutes while watching TV adds up if you do it pretty often) and bought a basic vitamin plus B, C and E (all heartily approved by my doc).

Oz lost 10 pounds her first semester. This is not a crash course. She's down 30 lbs now (over 2 years I think) - just slowly and surely. And, she's maintained rather than yo-yo'ing.

I think most people (college or not) would benefit from reading this book and trying out Oz's common sense plan. Older readers might need a little less food overall and might not opt to go out and have a snowball fight to burn calories, but the basics are here for a good lifestyle plan that isn't painful and does work.

This would be a great book for anyone (females more so) headed off to college or in college. Oz has dealt with being overweight. She did a lot of research and put a workable plan into action. I think most readers will love her style and also will be able to use her ideas and stay slimmer and healthier.

I picked this up this weekend at a bookstore and I found it to be a quick read with some really solid advice. It sounds like a diet and exercise plan that is very doable for the average college student.

My big complaint, though, is that the book is apparently aimed for women, but that is not clear on the back of the book. It's only apparent once you read a bit of the book. The Amazon description does state this, but I purchased this in a book store. Most of the information can be applied to anyone (such as the eating tips), but the chapter that suggests specific suppliments provides only information for women. There are other instances where charts in the book only list stats for women when the same information could easily be included for men.

An easily avoidable omission hurts an otherwise very good and informative book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book!!!, October 27, 2006

This review is from: The Dorm Room Diet: The 8-Step Program for Creating a Healthy Lifestyle Plan That Really Works (Paperback)
The Dorm Room Diet has great information in an easily accessible format. In addition to being informative, it's a quick read and is well written, which makes it much more enjoyable than most diet books. Shedding pounds is never easy. But Oz tells you everything you need to know to be healthy on campus - and offers sensible strategies to help you stay on target. The only thing this book doesn't do is actually lose the weight for you. (And if you expect a book to do that...) The Dorm Room Diet gets an A+!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is FUN and EASY to understand!, November 2, 2006
This review is from: The Dorm Room Diet: The 8-Step Program for Creating a Healthy Lifestyle Plan That Really Works (Paperback)
We all know how to drop the pounds. Eat less and move more. It's not rocket science. But Ms. Oz relays information in such a fun and easy way - it makes the whole process so much better! How many times have you fallen asleep reading those boring and dry diet books? Or worse have them cluttering your house collecting dust because you never even finished them! Daphne's tips and tricks for avoiding late night snacking are creative and yummy. Who doesn't love chocolate covered strawberries? I think Daphne Oz really hits her target audience with a diet book that has a lot of important things to say - but is said in a light hearted, stylish way. I think this book will start young adults off on a path of healthful eating habits for a lifetime. Great book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very picky about diet info & this book gave excellent advice, November 1, 2006
This review is from: The Dorm Room Diet: The 8-Step Program for Creating a Healthy Lifestyle Plan That Really Works (Paperback)
Very thoughtful, helpful & accurate. I have a background in traditional Chinese medicine & often disagree with diet advice. However, I found very little to disagree with & thought the information was well thought-out and researched. A must read for anyone looking for basic, important diet/health guidelines!

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm a college freshman and her diet really works!, November 30, 2006
This review is from: The Dorm Room Diet: The 8-Step Program for Creating a Healthy Lifestyle Plan That Really Works (Paperback)
Coming from a college freshman persective I have to say this book is a staple on my book shelf. I recently came down with a bad bug and I followed some of Daphne Oz's tips, and I believe some of the things she said I should do did make me better. I also learned how to eat to make my body healthy, and how it is possible to excersise everyday. I feel great, and I feel the healthiest I have ever been. I owe Daphne a big "Thank You!"

5.0 out of 5 stars In her first semester she lost ten pounds, November 6, 2006
This review is from: The Dorm Room Diet: The 8-Step Program for Creating a Healthy Lifestyle Plan That Really Works (Paperback)
If you're looking for an easy 8-step program to create a healthier lifestyle, THE DORM ROOM DIET: THE 8-STEP PROGRAM FOR CREATING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE THAT REALLY WORKS is for you. The author's father and grandfather were both cardiac surgeons and her grandmother was a nutritional advisor, so it's logical that college student Daphne Oz would develop her own approach and diet that works. In her first semester she lost ten pounds: boxed highlights of bonus tips accompany easy 'friend and foe' discussions of foods which are easy to choose.

I like this book very much. It was informative and the plan felt within reach. A lot of times with diet book you're required to give up your whole life to the whole diet in order for it to work. This book's approach was very live-able. I had this book when I lived in the college dorms, it was great. I lost about 15 lbs for the whole school year. Not that much, I know. But it's a lot to me, especially since I've had a history of gaining 10 pounds every year. I blame the stress of finals week and succumbing to bad habits for me not losing more weight. But it is a very well done book.

On a side note: I just borrowed her dad's You: Being Beautiful book. I am surprised how immature her dad's writing is compared to hers. It's really crazy how much difference there is between the two, one is concise and informative, the other style is bloated with fluff. Great job, Daphne Oz.

This book taught me it's ok to indulge sometimes - as long as it doesn't become a habit! It's perfect for my lifestyle, because I can enjoy foods my friends are, yet still be healthy! Great for the health-conscious college kid!!!

This book is very informative for the college freshman. As every freshman knows, their life changes as soon as they step foot on campus, for the good and the bad. This book outlines the pitfalls of not eating the right stuff. It's an easy format and a quick read.
