This was a purchase for my son, who's going to college and wanted an alternative to just the normal locking safe that would be stowed in a drawer and easily stolen. This was recommended by a students' group at his university, and after some research, Amazon's price was the very lowest by far.

The box is quite a bit larger than I expected it to be. Rather than just a camera and maybe the Zune and some paperwork I expected to fit in there, there's room for a small video camera that we weren't sure he could take and that still only ended up filling it halfway.

The vault attaches via a bracket at the back and is designed to adapt to any size loft; I wasn't sure it would work with the kind we were required to use, which was a tubular metal post, but it did fine. We ended up having to install it resting on the desk, though. Because of the loft frame, the vault tended to spin around unless it was braced on a flat surface when attached.

The weight and thickness of the vault material is easily better than any standard locking box, although it obviously doesn't match the standards of a fire safe, which it isn't intended to be. The lock would be the weakest area of the product, if I had to think hard and pick one. It's rather simplistic; the four-number twist combination lock isn't exactly James Bond material, but it does the job.

This really is a terrific idea, security-wise, when it comes to protecting all of the expensive stuff you're sending into dorms, which aren't exactly the safest places to leave things lying around. This is a sturdy, roomy product that I think works.

I have given these Dorm Vaults as gifts instead of money for a more personal graduation present. Every single kid that has gotten one has told me that it is the most useful and practical thing they have received. I have gotten the nicest thank you notes on them! With all these iPods and cell phones and expensive small electronics that people have, it is an easy target to be misplaced or borrowed by someone else - not to mention the hassle is in replacing the music, phone, etc. I have one for our home, too.

This is a useful lock box, but don't rely on the lock. IT IS POSSIBLE TO RENDER THE LOCK USELESS BY RESETTING THE COMBINATION THROUGH CASUAL HANDLING. Once you accidentally reset the lock, only really good luck at guessing the correct combination will return it to use again. I wasn't lucky. And don't buy just any lock; buy one that has a hasp that is equal to or less than 1/4". That leaves out a lot of good locks. Stuff like that belongs in an item's description. The cheap lock - shoddy, really - and poor description earned this 3 stars. With a decent lock and item description, it would be a 5-star item.

Going off to College a safe box is always recommended and on the list of things to bring. I was so excited to find a safe box here on amazon made specifically for a dorm room! (Thank you amazon, you have everything!) This dorm vault is perfect. It is square and just the right size to hold everything you could need to put in it without being too big seeing as most dorm rooms don't have a lot of space. It attaches nicely to almost anywhere (I have mine attached to my lower bedpost) and is not very hard to install (no tools required). Although it says in the instructions that it recommends you use two people to install it I was able to install it fairly easily on my own. There is plenty of room in this vault. I was able to fit an ipad, ipod, small camera, passport and pouch, expensive memory sticks, beats headphones (which are big and bulky), wallet and jewelry in a small pouch. It is big enough you can fit basically anything that needs to be in a safe into it. It is also heavy duty and well made. The tin is very thick and would take a lot to dent much alone break. I took the advice of many other reviews and got a lock to replace the one that came with it. Although it is nice it came with a lock the lock does feel chinsy and there is information in the instructions of how to replace the lock. The chinsy-ness of the lock though had nothing to do with the vault. I replaced it with the Master Lock 653D Set-Your-Own-Combination 2-Inch Padlock, 1-Pack - Colors May Vary.

It works perfectly with this lock and overall this is an excellent safe box and I would highly recommend it to everyone going off to College.

Overall: 5/5 stars

I bought this for my daughter's dorm room and we attached it to her bed. Plenty of room for her cell phone, camera, wallet, id's etc. She doesnt have to worry who comes in and out of her room because her valuables are safe in her safe! Clever idea that is very practical. Easy to attach to bed frame.

Excellent product. For a college dorm vault it is VERY secure. I've tried other similarly priced vaults, and they were easy to break into, including Sentry Safe and a few others.

This one beats them all. I don't like combination locks, so I got a MasterLock with a key. They've included very small bolts to plug up the holes in the back if you don't want to use the attachment feature. I don't use the attachment feature, because I like to move it around from time to time. I'm glad they included those small bolts, plus little rubber caps, so the bolts don't scratch up the valuable content inside the safe. There's also a small rubber mat at the bottom of the safe to prevent scratching of your objects inside.

The hinge in the back is solid. Again, with Sentry Safe and the others, it's easy to wobble or even SLIDE OUT the hinge, making those safes a joke! You would need a sledge hammer to get into this one! And of course a sledge hammer would damage the contents.

The thickness of the steel is just fine considering the price of this product. It's not flimsy at all like one reviewer suggested. It's about twice the thickness of the steel that would be used to contract a toaster.

My only concern is quality control. If they cheapen it up by reducing the thickness of the steel, the hinge, or taking out the rubber caps, rubber mat, or the small bolts for those who don't want to use this permanently attached to something, my review would seriously go down to like 2 stars. It's just about right for what it is. And again, once you replace the included lock with a MasterLock, you are good to go and have on your hands a 5-star product!

The safe might keep your stuff safe, but the padlock did not even work and was really cheap. If you are thinking about this safe, also think about buying your own lock to go with it.

I got this because I had a lock box stolen with my truck title and pain meds in it. I think this will work very well, in order for anyone to take it they will have to tear my bed apart and take part of it with them. I did get a better lock to put on it because the one that came with it seems like it would not be hard to break.

This is a great idea. I gave it to numberous college bounds kids for graduation. Everyone thought it was a great idea. My 16 year son even asked if he could get one for his room for his personal items.

It is more tin can like than I expected. I thought it would be heavier and sturdier than it is. It looks heavier to me in the picture, but it will do for now.
