Larger and heavier than it looks
on August 16, 2010
This was a purchase for my son, who's going to college and wanted an alternative to just the normal locking safe that would be stowed in a drawer and easily stolen. This was recommended by a students' group at his university, and after some research, Amazon's price was the very lowest by far.
The box is quite a bit larger than I expected it to be. Rather than just a camera and maybe the Zune and some paperwork I expected to fit in there, there's room for a small video camera that we weren't sure he could take and that still only ended up filling it halfway.
The vault attaches via a bracket at the back and is designed to adapt to any size loft; I wasn't sure it would work with the kind we were required to use, which was a tubular metal post, but it did fine. We ended up having to install it resting on the desk, though. Because of the loft frame, the vault tended to spin around unless it was braced on a flat surface when attached.
The weight and thickness of the vault material is easily better than any standard locking box, although it obviously doesn't match the standards of a fire safe, which it isn't intended to be. The lock would be the weakest area of the product, if I had to think hard and pick one. It's rather simplistic; the four-number twist combination lock isn't exactly James Bond material, but it does the job.
This really is a terrific idea, security-wise, when it comes to protecting all of the expensive stuff you're sending into dorms, which aren't exactly the safest places to leave things lying around. This is a sturdy, roomy product that I think works.
