Editorial Reviews

Lerner wrote the 12 songs that comprise Dormarion in early 2012, and road-tripped over the summer to Spoon drummer Jim Eno's Austin TX studio to make the record. On Dormarion Lane, to be specific. "It's a beautiful-sounding word, and if you Google it, nothing but this one tiny street comes up," says Lerner, although thisis obviously about to change. "No origin, no description. I can't tell you what the word means. It's like something from Lost."

Biography

"If you don't like Telekinesis, your ears don't work." --SPIN.COM

“Telekinesis: The smartest, catchiest, rockin'est pop of the last decade. Every time a cut comes up from this Seattle-based band I literally shake my head and ask the empty room, or train full of commuters, "Why isn't this the biggest band in the world?!" Blank stares.” ... Read more in Amazon's Telekinesis Store

Telekinesis is a one-man-band project from a Seattle guy named Michael Benjamin Lerner, who, if Wikipedia is to be believed, is the offspring of the guy who voiced Fox McCloud in nineties videogame Star Fox. That has nothing to do with the music in question here, but that Fox McCloud's spawn is 3 records deep into a solo career makes me feel pretty old.

Lerner carries the torch for the kind of effortlessly likable power-pop that isn't going to win him any sales awards, but should guarantee a certain level of critical acclaim and cult popularity for as long as he wants to keep it up. Names like Marshall Crenshaw, The Smithereens, Freedy Johnston, and Miracle Legion spring to mind, not for any specific sonic reference as much as for a general approach to music. Telekinesis is humble in the presentation and scope, but these kind of hooky, energetic songs don't write themselves.

For this third record (everyone talks about sophomore albums, but nobody ever uses the word "junior" to describe a third record: what gives?), Lerner adds some synths to his standard guitar/bass/drum mix, but the results shouldn't scare anyone who enjoyed the previous two (12 Desperate Straight Lines, the last one, was particularly good). The new wave flourishes totally make sense, and for a guy who has successfully covered ELO in the past, it's not a surprise at all.

"Power Lines," the opening tune, pairs a guitar boogie with the kind of sliding melody heard from labelmates Hospitality, and surprisingly one of the highlights on this slighty glammed-up record comes with an earnest acoustic ballad entitled "Symphony." It's been getting compared to the kind of whistful stuff Big Star used to do, and the comparison is apt.

Great uplift, fast pace and high energy propel this album forward. Telekinesis were also impressively energetic in performance in Atlanta at the Drunken Unicorn May 4, 2013, and inspired despite having been on the road for five weeks. The whole group was so friendly and hung around afterwards mingling with the crowd and taking time to get to know fans. A great credit to Seattle.

One word to describe Dormarion from Telekinesis..."Refreshing"

Now...more words. This album has so many great sing-along songs that you'll wish you had your own band and vocal range as versatile as Michael Lerner. But sing-along anyway...what the hell...live a little!!!

I love every song on this album. Two tracks really grabbed me..."Lean on Me". This could be one of the best driving around in your car songs ever...you'll be playing drums on the steering wheel.

"Ghosts and Creatures" If you ever wanted to hear an instant a hit song...this is it. The melody is something you will whistle for the rest of the day.

Telekensis isn't reinventing the music wheel... but they know how to roll their own...in a unique way.

This will be your "go to" album for almost any occcasion.

This is a good album. Heard it a couple weeks before it came out on NPR's "First Listen". I've heard of Telekinesis, but ever gave them a listen. Boy, am I happy that I have now. This album has a full, deep indie rock sound. Each song is just as good as the other. The opening track hits you right in the face with it's bluesy feel. I have not given it all my attention, so I can't tell you how the lyrics are. I assure you, they're not silly. This album is worth every penny and I'm quite happy with how it sounds. Please buy Dormarion.

This was one of the six records I bought when I picked up my new (old) tecnics record player. Three bands from 90's up, to three old band from 90's down. At fisrt I got it because I heard the song ghosts & ceatures on the radio once and it stuck with me so I saw this and got it did not like it the first or second time but the third listen. I was jamming. really good songs and the albums is structured well.
