Product Description

This Dormer A191 jobber length drill bit set contains 20 high-speed steel drill bits, one each of wire gauge sizes #80 through #61, with a black oxide finish and a 118-degree conventional point for use in general-purpose applications on ferrous material. High-speed steel (HSS) provides hardness for wear resistance, and the black oxide finish acts as a lubricant to reduce wear while promoting chip and coolant flow. These jobber length drill bits have a drilling depth up to four times their diameter. The round shank accommodates most drill chucks. The set comes in a plastic index case with labeled compartments for identification and organization. Drill bits conform to Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) 338 standard.

Drill bits are cutting tools used to make holes in a range of materials using machines such as handheld portable drills, machining centers, and lathes. Drill bits come in a variety of lengths and types, the most common of which is the twist drill bit. The round, twisted shaft of the twist drill bit typically has two cutting edges and flutes. The helical twist of the flutes brings chips up and away from the cutting edges and allows for coolant to reach the cutting edges. Jobber length twist drill bits, the most common length of twist drill bit, offer a good compromise of length and reach to work with the widest range of materials and applications. Mechanic's length twist drill bits (also called maintenance length) are a little shorter than jobber length and less prone to deflection when drilling. Short length twist drill bits (also called stub or screw-machine length) are the shortest and stiffest twist drill bits, helping to reduce the chance of deflection or breakage when drilling. Reduced shank drill bits (also called Silver and Deming drill bits) have a shank that is smaller in diameter than its shaft, permitting drilling machines with either a 1/2" or 3/4" drill chuck to create large holes. Long length twist drill bits (also called taper length) are a little longer than jobber length, allowing for deeper holes and longer reach. Extra long twist drill bits (also called extension) are longer than long length twist drill bits for greater reach or for drilling deeper holes.

Precision Dormer manufactures cutting tools under the brands Precision Twist, Dormer, and Union Butterfield. The company, headquartered in Crystal Lake, IL, meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards 9001 and 14000.

Verified Purchase
Back on Christmas day of 2008, I bought some Dormer brand drills I had found listed on Craigslist. Not being familiar with the Dormer brand, I thought I would give them a try since the price seemed fair. The individual selling them had four different sizes available so I bought one pack each of the largest and smallest sizes he had. I've tried many brands over the years and had almost given up hope of ever finding a good brand of drills. That was almost four years ago and I can honestly say today that the Dormer drills are the best I've ever bought. I've only used one drill out of each pack and they are as sharp today as when I bought them. I've drilled at least 50 holes with each drill in materials ranging from hardened steel to copper to aluminum to plastic and still haven't managed to dull either bit.

So, when the time came that I needed a set of wire gauge drills, I looked at several brands and finally decided to go with a brand I trust. I was not disappointed. This set is of the same high quality as the Dormer drills I had purchased in 2008. If you doubt the quality standards of the Dormer brand, just do a Google search and check them out for yourself. Also, the storage case is very well designed. It's designed in such a way as to allow only one drill at a time to be removed from the case. There's nothing quite as frustrating as accidentally dropping a bunch of drills this small and then trying to find them. The unique design of this case eliminates that potential problem.
