Book Description

1997
This is the 2nd volume of the Monarch series, and is dedicated to the Dornier 335 Arrow. The Do 335 was one of the most unusual single-seat fighters of German Luftwaffe.

Powered by two of the most powerful 12-cylinder engines, one in the nose and the other buried in the rear fuselage, it was probably the fastest propeller-driven warplane of the Second World War. The Do 335 Arrow appeared too late to see operational service with the Luftwaffe, but it was a significant bridge between prop and jet-powered aircraft. The advanced Do 435, He 535 and Ju 635 projects are also covered in this volume. The book contains 250 photographs, 53 color photographs, 22 color illustrations and 50 drawings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dornier Arrow Twin Engine Fighter, December 24, 2009
By
This review is from: Dornier Do 335 Arrow (Monogram Monarch Series No. 2) (Hardcover)
The Dornier Arrow was another of those late WW2 attempts by the Germans to turn the tide against Allied bombers by creating a high altitude, high performance fighter. As with all cutting edge technologies, this took time, which the Germans did not have. In the end, they created only 70 of these very intriguing planes. What made this one so different was the attempt to have two engines, one in front and one in back. It was fast, maneuverable for its size and would have been a dangerous threat to bombers.

The book is top notch. You get much more than just a review of statistics and data about the plane. There's a brief history of Dornier, the aircraft developed before and during the war. Some really great B&W photos of very unusual planes. There are many color diagrams, drawings, photos that show different design proposals, line drawings of the inside, outside of the plane, cutaways, black & white photographs. All of the charts and drawings are translated into English but one or two. The best part - the many color photos of the perfectly restored Do-335 taken in 1975.

This is an excellent book for modelers, aviation buffs of all kinds, and those curious to see what might have been. I am very glad to have this book in my collection.
