5.0 out of 5 stars Little Golden Books' Return to Oz (pt. 3), June 12, 2005
By

This review is from: Dorothy in the Ornament Rooms (Walt Disney Pictures : Return to Oz) (Hardcover)
The Rescue of His Majesty, King Scarecrow and the Emerald City of Oz.

Just like the "Little Golden 'Dorothy Returns to Oz' Book", I first saw this book in Primary School, and it was my favourite book to read, because the pictures are excellent (although Mombi doesn't look her best in her 1 and only picture). In the previous Little Golden "Escape from the Witch's Castle" Book, the friends managed to escape Mombi's castle. This book continues from that point and mainly focuses on the encounter with the Nome King (thus the "lack of deatils" as said by the other reviwer of this book). The first two pages briefly recap how Dorothy, Billina and Tik-Tok get imprisoned in the Emerald tower by Mombi the Witch, only to escape with the help of the Flying Gump, now joined by Jack Pumpkinhead. Once they hide Billina, the Nome King's face appears in the mountain and Dorothy is sucked into the mountain, where she is briefly reunited with scarecrow, only to have the Nome King vanish him. As Tik-Tok, Jack and the Gump appear, the Nome King proposes for them to play a little guessing game to find the Scarecrow. One by one, Dorothy's friends make their guesses and fail. After Tik-Tok goes in, the Nome King reveals his possession of the Ruby Slippers. Inside the Ornament Room, Dorothy manages to find the Scarecrow and work-out the Nome King's trick. After the Gump and Jack are found, the Nome King interrupts and attempts to stop them once and for all, but Billina thwarts his plan and he crumbles. Dorothy regains possession of the Ruby Slippers and wishes them all back to Oz, where the Emerald City and Tik-Tok are finally restored to life.

It was such a pleasure to see these old pictures again, but it was an even greater to see pictures that I had either forgotten or never seen before back in OLR. The pictures/text in this book slightly differ from the movie: the Gump has only one sofa for a body and doesn't fall apart while flying, the Nome King is already almost-human (in the movie he gradually becomes more human with each wrong guess), the Ruby Slippers have buckles instead of ribbons, the Nomes don't chase Dorothy and her friends throughout the Rooms and Mombi doesn't warn the Nome King about Billina the chicken.

When I first saw this book, I was puzzled at how the ending didn't go on any longer, but now I know that the actual ending comes in the next and final Little Golden Return to Oz Book "Dorothy Saves the Emerald City".

2.0 out of 5 stars Only for serious collectors-Not for reading pleasure, March 31, 2003

This review is from: Dorothy in the Ornament Rooms (Walt Disney Pictures : Return to Oz) (Hardcover)
I only reccomend this book to collectors who want to have all of the "Return To Oz" movie books. It is not a book that is very well written, and it's obvious that the author was had limited pages to use, because lots of details are left out. It is very poorly written. The only good thing is the illistrations. I would only buy this if you were just DESPERATE to have it. It's a good thing I only spent a matter of dollars on it, or it would have been a waste!
