This review is from: Dorsai (Mass Market Paperback)
I read this printing of "Dorsai!" a very long time ago. I purchased one of these older copies and enjoyed reading it again. Gordon R. Dickson is a competent story teller. I've read this book twice and enjoyed it both times. They fabricated books well back in the 1980's. My used copy had no markings and a solid binding. Starting on page 273 is an essay by Sandra Miesel, "The Road to the Dark Tower," that describes the Childe Cycle, which is a series of related books. "The cycle is an epic of human evolution founded on the premise that mankind is a single organism." There is a Wikipedia article on the "Childe Cycle.""Dorsai" is the story of Donal Graeme, a young Dorsai with special talents who has a series of successful experiences as a combat leader. The Dorsai are a people on the planet Dorsai who make their living as mercenaries. Picture "Spartans for hire" in the far future. The story is fast paced and entertaining. There is an article on Wikipedia dedicated to this one book. How can you not enjoy a book that has inspired 2 Wikipedia articles? Perhaps I should give it 5 stars. I just rarely give a 5 star review. |
