5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, September 7, 2011
This review is from: Dos Indios (Paperback)
Dos Indios will always remain a cherished book in my library. I can't imagine why it hasn't received more acclaim and how it could ever be forgotten. Harold Jaffe's writing style is beautiful and impressive, it remains strong because it does not rely on flamboyancy or flowery prose. The story of a crippled Peruvian musician is fully engrossing, compassionate, and haunting. I couldn't put this book down and I am so happy that I chanced upon it! Sure to make you think and of obvious interest to people already involved in Latin America--blessings and struggles alike. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Short and enigmatic tale, March 11, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Dos Indios (Paperback)
Though I'm quite a fan of Harold Jaffe's short fiction, his novels usually leave me flat. This novel follows that pattern.

This short book tells the story of Peruvian Indians and the trials they face. The plot is straightforward and significant events take place (one character loses his legs in a massive earthquake), but it never felt to me like it was going anywhere, like there was any kind of payoff or point. The prose was good, as always with Jaffe, and the characters were genuine, but I felt like I'd just taken a ride with no destination.

Fortunately it is a short book and a very quick read.
