Editorial Reviews

DOS PELICULAS MEXICANAS pays homage to the cinematic genre of lucha libre a form of Mexican wrestling marked by the use of masks tag teams and high-flying acrobatics. Starting out in the 1950s as typical gangster crime dramas '60s and '70s lucha libre employed increasingly outlandish storylines involving supernatural foes like aliens mummies and zombies. A fun mix of sci-fi horror comedy action and suspense this campy doubleheader from the golden age of '70s lucha libre features some of the genre's biggest stars including El Santo Blue Demon Mil Mascaras Superzan and El Rayo de Jalisco: EL TRIUNFO DE LOS CAMPEONES JUSTICIEROS (1974) and UNA ROSA SOBRE EL RING (1973).Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: LATIN/LATIN Rating: NR UPC: 787364730797

4.0 out of 5 stars A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME....., May 29, 2009

This review is from: Dos Peliculas Mexicanas - Triunfo De Los & Una Rosa (DVD)
Okay anyone who has been reading my reviews for Amazon could make a pretty educated guess by saying that I'm a fan of the Mexiluchahero film genre. This DVD features two pretty good films from that genre.Triunfo de los Campeones Justicieros is the third and final installment in the Champions of Justice series. This isn't quite as strong as the first two entries(largely do to the line-up of wrestlers featured),but it's still good psychotronc fun.The Champions add a female member to their group as they thwart an invasion of midget invaders from outer space. All three films from the original trilogy feature villianous midgets. The aliens are after a secret formula from a scientist who is travelling incognito as the owner of a circus. The Champions are represented by Blue Demon,el Phantasmo Blanco,Superzan and actress Elsa Cardenas as Venus. The second film Una Rosa Sobre el Ring stars the great Mil Mascaras in a movie that
deals more with social issues than crimefighting or monster-bashing action. But any movie that features the "man of a thousand masks" in his athletic prime is a welcome addition. It's just too bad he wasn't available for the other film.Superzan and el Phantasmo Blanco are poor substitutes for the charismatic Mascaras and Tinieblas.
