Book Description

December 1994 9 and up4 and up
Her real name is Evangeline Josephine Freeland -- but she has had the nickname Dot since before she can remember, and never calls herself anything else.

Dot has free run of Roselawn, a country estate her father bought in hopes the outdoor life will restore her health. And run freely is exactly what she does, day after day, with ever greater spring to her steps, and with ever greater appetite.

One morning, finishing her breakfast and scampering out upon the Lawn, Dot notices a tiny path leading through a high, thick hedge. "I'll explore!" she says to herself, and scoots herself through . . . to behold a tiny vine-covered cottage, and, on the path leading to it, a little boy with a broad-brimmed straw hat.

The boy is the gardener's son, Tot -- who proves a wonderful playmate from the start . . . and a fine partner in adventures: for the two are swept away on a boat, and find themselves casting up in a strange place they never knew existed -- Merryland!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful fantay book with a happy ending., October 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dot and Tot of Merryland (Paperback)
I have been looking for this book in antique stores for 10 years. I was so pleased to see it had been reprinted. I remembered the title and the story about the split man. I have used this character as an illustration in many speeches that I have given. I wish that sometimes I could split myself so as to perform all the various tasks to be done. This book would be a good one for Disney productions to make into a movie! I am 71 years old now, so you can see that the original reading as achild had a lasting impression !

5.0 out of 5 stars Baum's Masterpiece!, August 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Dot and Tot of Merryland (Paperback)
One of his most creative and wonderful books, Dot and Tot of Merryland enchanted me from the start. It is certianlly unusual, with a complete absence of any antagonists or even a coherent plot. It is just the journy of two chrildren through a silly, magical world where nothing is wrong and nothing ever changes. It is so pleasent to read and even better to read to a small child.
