Editorial Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews

Transplanted New York cop Dave, now chief investigator for Public Defender Anne Swenson in Mesa Grande, Colorado, has hired young Roger Meyer (Mom Meets Her Maker) to assist him. Roger is in the cast of Macbeth, being produced by the town's amateur theater group, and is on the scene when one-time Hollywood actor-director Martin Osborn is stabbed to death on stage during the opening performance. Vivacious, promiscuous Sally Michaels, playing Lady Macbeth and recently discarded by Osborn, is charged with the crime and is to be defended by Swenson. But Dave's mom, who solves all his cases, isn't satisfied. By the time she's guided him through a dozen other possibilities to a reenactment of the scene, another cast member has been killed and several false statements uncovered. The denouement is relentlessly overdrawn; motivation for the killer's elaborate, reckless plan seems absurdly feeble; the split narration, alternating between Dave and Roger, is no help, and Mom's getting to be a downright bore. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. 3.0 out of 5 stars Been a while but still a fun read, September 19, 2011
This review is from: Mom Doth Murder Sleep (Paperback)
OK, so I haven't read the "Mom" books since I discovered them in my hometown library in the 90s, but I remember loving them so much I just had to look them up again (ok and see if they were available for my kindle) I noticed that they only had only star and I thought it deserved better than that, even if I can't remember the whole plotline. Out of all the "Mom" books this was my favorite. Maybe because it was about theatre, maybe because I was taking the play in school, maybe just because I love the idea of an elderly woman solving murder mysteries which a shrug of her shoulders and an "I'm your mother, that's why" kinda attitude. Just a fun book to read and a good series overall.

1.0 out of 5 stars From Back Cover, May 21, 2006
This review is from: Mom Doth Murder Sleep (Hardcover)
MOM LOVED MURDER LIKE MOST PEOPLE LOVE CROSSWORD PUZZLES

As chief investigator for the Mesa Grande, Colorado, public defenders office, Dave's reputation for solving the toughest cases had followed him all the way from New York City. So had his mother, his very unofficial homicide consultant. She did her best detective work over plates of pot roast and strudel, happily feeding her son while gleaming all the details of his latest case.

Now murder takes center stage at a local amateur theater production of Macbeth. Mom, of course, has some ideas of her own about whodunit as dark secrets, storm passions, rage and jealousy unfold. Soon there's more drama offstage than on as murder makes another curtain call... before Dave - and Mom - close down the show.
