5.0 out of 5 stars "Good Old Catholic Bible"
The Douay-Rheims New Testament is a faithful word for word translation from Jerome's Latin Vulgate. The style of this edition is thoroughly Latinate and makes this Bible singularly unique. Many words are kept in their original form: neophyte, Paraclete, sancta sanctorum, and archysynagogue. This Bible first appeared in 1582 and was exstensively used in the formation of...

This is the classic Roman Catholic Bible, translated directly from the Latin Vulgate. It is in the same type of beautiful English used by Shakespeare.

The actual text is absolutely faithful to the teaching of the Catholic Church, but this particular edition was photocopied rather than typeset. Some pages are so blurry that they can barely be read. When one points...

This review is from: Douay-Rheims New Testament of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Translated from the Latin Vulgate (Paperback)
This Bible first appeared in 1582 and was exstensively used in the formation of the King James Version. This Bible is praised for its freedom from discrepancies found in the Greek texts, for its sheer antiquity, and for its defintion at the Council of Trent stating its authenticity.

The actual text is absolutely faithful to the teaching of the Catholic Church, but this particular edition was photocopied rather than typeset. Some pages are so blurry that they can barely be read. When one points this out to the publisher they act as if it doesn't matter.

Otherwise, though, this Bible is printed on excellent paper and is in a very dureable sewn leather binding.

If only they would typeset it - or at least re-phontocopy the clurry pages!

This book is in constant use, alongside a Gideon version, that I use in a class I am taking. It is interesting to review, side by side, the translations. The Gideon is definitely easier to read and understand.
