Book Description

Double Bass Drumming Explained is the definitive guide for how to play bass drum with both feet. This is not just another method book stuffed with endless beats and fills. Rather than simply listing exercises in musical notation, this book actually explains, in detail, how double bass works at the most basic level including: pedal setup, drum kit arrangement, single stroke techniques, double stroke techniques, drum head selection, tuning, drumming anatomy, and more.

An indispensable companion to any double bass practice routine, this book is the missing first chapter to all the other double bass workbooks available today. If you want to learn to play double bass or refine your current approach, look no further for the most in-depth discussion of both basic information and higher level concepts. Working through a volume of double bass excercises is good, but practicing them correctly and efficiently will accelerate your learning curve. Double bass Drumming Explained will give you the inside knowledge to supercharge your practicing by insuring that you are playing double bass in a way that makes sense and gets results in the realms of speed, power, and accuracy.

In this book you will learn to play such techniques as: heel-up, heel-down, floating or flatfoot, heel-toe, slide, and swivel, which means you will be equipped to play double bass in any given situation at any tempo and at any volume. Over 25 pictures, diagrams, and musical examples are included to augment the text. Be sure to check out Double Bass Drumming Explained Part 2: The Workbook for 300 more musical examples to help you improve even further.

Finally I feel like I'm putting it together. I tried some of the other methods, but they were just diagrams and patterns. Bloom gives a comprehensive explainatioin of the basics which allow me to reach thenext level.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok for the price August 30, 2012

There is some useful information and as the author states in the foreword, this book is meant to be a supplement to books that you already own. I didn't particularly like the way the information was presented.. I felt like I was almost reading a novel and not an instructional book. It can't be easy trying to describe a technique solely with words or pictures, I think videos work best for this. However, I think the book is worth the price and it's great that more and more books are being written about pedal/foot control because we drummers know that there isn't enough information out there at the moment.

All the information in this book is available on most drum forums, and much of the information is often debated on forums (such as spring tension).

This book is more of a brief overview of the basics and covers topics like setting up your bass drum pedal, bass drum angle, and a very brief overview of the different techniques used, but it does not go into any detail on how to practice those techniques. It would have been useful if the author had stated some practice methods and a few practice routines.
