From the Author

I wanted to write a thriller that would be enjoyable in its own terms but leave behind something. I've always been interested in doppelgänger fiction (it's been around for 150 years at least, but mainly as mystical / horror) and this seemed like the ideal vehicle to develop into an original sci fi thriller. I don't think that's been attempted as often.

Doppelgänger (wiki): In fiction and folklore, a doppelgänger is a paranormal double of a living person. It also describes the sensation of having glimpsed oneself in peripheral vision, in a position where there is no chance that it could have been a reflection.

More About the Author

Seb Kirby is the author of the James Blake Thriller series (TAKE NO MORE, REGRET NO MORE and FORGIVE NO MORE) and the Raymond Bridges sci fi thriller series (DOUBLE BIND). Look out for the new stand alone psychological thriller EACH DAY I WAKE, available from September.

He says: "I've been an avid reader from an early age - my grandfather ran a mobile lending library in Birmingham and when it closed my parents inherited many of the books. From the first moment I was hooked. Now, as a full-time writer myself, it's my goal to add to the magic of the wonderful words and stories I discovered back then.

"I've been fortunate to travel widely and I now draw on that experience in my writing. Favourite places (in no particular order) include: Venice, Florence, San Francisco, San Diego, Boston, New York, London, The English Lake District, Lisbon, Crete....."

Having read and enjoyed Mr. Kirby's first novel, I was fairly certain his second book would be entertaining also. I wasn't expecting it to be so completely different though. He has created a unique tale of doppelgangers who body snatch earthlings after their own world has been destroyed. It follows one entity's journey from body to body as he tries to relate his `truth' in order to warn the earth and save it from a hostile takeover.

With twists and turns aplenty, I often found myself confused and compelled to keep reading to figure out what was happening. I was first annoyed that the protagonist told his story in the present tense, but finally figured out it was because he only lived in the `here and now' - and he had difficulty understanding why everyone else lived so much in the past. There are several underlying messages such as this one that will make you ponder your own existence.

An intriguing and creative thriller, Mr Kirby has penned a worthy second book. Fabulous job!

Seb Kirby has taken a new direction in his second novel. It is at heart a deeply intriguing psychological thriller.
I would say it leans towards science fiction although it still contains elements of mystery and murder as in his debut novel Take No More (The murder mystery thriller). Imagine not only the sort of identity theft where someone steals your credit card and passwords but where s/he effectively becomes you. The physical resemblance is so close it fools your nearest and dearest. This is not Sci-fi in the tentacled green monsters or whizzy machines sense but it concerns the potential destruction of our planet at our own hands and those who wish to move in and make use of it.

I began by suspecting the narrator, Raymond Bridges, of concocting the story for his own ends but as the book progressed I found him a sympathetic character and was really rooting for him. Had I been a nail-biter I'd have been up to my elbows by about 85%. The chapters are short so it's tempting just to read another... and another! The book is narrated by a character who is not familiar with the use of the past tense and initially this takes a little getting used to. It doesn't hinder the flow of the story though and I found it an effective ploy for distancing him from others.

This is a book that hooks you early on and as the plot unfolds, it's hard to stop reading. An excellent story and really well told.

I finished Seb Kirby's new novel Double Bind in one sitting - I literally could not put it down. The storyline and the characters are so compelling that you're drawn in from the start. The whole doppelganger idea was so unique and unusual and Seb used it to great affect throughout the book. Put this one on your must read list if you like a good, tight, well-written thriller with a few exotic twists and turns.

Enjoyable but a bit hard to follow at times. Explanation of events and process are a bit foggy at times. Tale moves at a good pace and keeps the reader's interest.

In Double Bind, author Seb Kirby combines mystery slash thriller with science fiction in a puzzling whodunit type plot that made me feel like I was reading Ray Bradbury.

When the main character, a successful writer named Raymond Bridges, bumps into his double, the story takes off and never lets up. With his sexy love interest, English professor, Victoria Bletchley, Bridges and Victoria must try to outsmart London gangsters and corporate villains and answer the main question. Who is Raymond Bridges really?

Mr. Kirby kept me entertained from beginning to end with plot twists, murders, motives and bad guys.

It isn't easy for a writer to cross genres, but I believe Mr. Kirby succeeded in delivering a fast-paced read you won't soon be able to forget. Double Bind will stay with you.

What I think of Seb Kirby's Double-Bind

"The guy with the bad attitude has been following me all week."

Seb Kirby gets right into the story in Double Bind. There's not a wasted word in this book: no background, no world-building, no nonsense. The writing is spare and clean, active yet evocative, told in first-person present tense, which enhances the action and immediacy.

Take this for an example: "Elmington Drive is a wealthy suburban street. Smart gardens, no parked cars, large houses, most with gravel drives and tall shrubs."

Because he gives readers credit for knowing something, Kirby is able to painted a picture in a few phrases.

In short, Kirby is a true professional writer of fiction.

The story begins with the narrator, successful author Raymond Bridges, meeting his double at a book signing. The double accuses Bridges of stealing his face and identity -- and his pen name. Soon, Bridges finds himself in a new body, victim of spreading ripples of identities displaced into new bodies. Double Bind is a science-fiction story presented like a mystery -- not an easy assignment for any writer. Kirby has the skill to pull it off.

Kirby makes it all make sense by explaining the process and the science through the characters' actions. Bridges, who becomes Erin Pascoe (that's a man's name in the UK, apparently) gradually learns the details, like one of Raymond Chandler's detectives.

Kirby makes his characters real through their words and actions more than through verbose descriptions. Bridges is actually not that likeable. He's a liar, an imposter, someone more than willing to take shortcuts to get what he wants, no matter what they do to others.
