Book Description

Over there. Someone like you. Not just like you. Someone who is you.

In the sci fi thriller Double Bind, successful writer Raymond Bridges must unravel a mystery that goes to the heart of his being and face apparently irresolvable doubts about his identity, set off by encountering a perfect double of himself.

It's a thrilling journey that leads him to question so much of what he finds in the world around him - even the loyalty of those he knows, including his love, Victoria.

What he uncovers is a conspiracy that shakes the world he knows to its foundations and asks key questions about how we live now.

From the reviews of Double Bind

'One of the most thought-provoking thrillers I've read in a long time.'

'I liked Bridges. I also liked his gorgeous girlfriend Victoria. I wanted them to win. I wanted Bridges to succeed in his mission, once he discovers what it is.'

'The storyline and the characters are so compelling that you're drawn in from the start. The whole doppelganger idea was so unique and unusual.'

'What a fantastical si-fi told as a cautionary tale - I loved it! This story is fast-paced, extremely well-written and extraordinarily different - one that gripped me from the beginning to the very end.'

'This easy-to-understand-and-follow Sci-Fi / Action / Thriller / Adventure / Romance wondrously expands your imagination. This is what a truly great author can achieve and Seb Kirby fits the bill.'

'Hooks you early on.... it's hard to stop reading. An excellent story and really well told.'

'An engaging narrator with a nice line in challenging humour and moments of real emotion.'

'Thought provoking and exciting ..... chillingly believable.'

'I like a thriller like this one where the plot takes you for a wild ride but leaves no loose ends in the grand finale.'

From the Author

Double Bind is the first in a three book series of sci fi thrillers featuring Raymond Bridges.

I wanted to write a thriller that would be enjoyable in its own terms but leave behind something. I've always been interested in doppelganger fiction (it's been around for 150 years at least, but mainly as mystical / horror) and this seemed like the ideal vehicle to develop into an original sci fi thriller. I don't think that's been attempted as often.

Doppelganger (wiki): In fiction and folklore, a doppelgänger is a paranormal double of a living person. It also describes the sensation of having glimpsed oneself in peripheral vision, in a position where there is no chance that it could have been a reflection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Double good! September 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having read and enjoyed Mr. Kirby's first novel, I was fairly certain his second book would be entertaining also. I wasn't expecting it to be so completely different though. He has created a unique tale of doppelgangers who body snatch earthlings after their own world has been destroyed. It follows one entity's journey from body to body as he tries to relate his `truth' in order to warn the earth and save it from a hostile takeover.

With twists and turns aplenty, I often found myself confused and compelled to keep reading to figure out what was happening. I was first annoyed that the protagonist told his story in the present tense, but finally figured out it was because he only lived in the `here and now' - and he had difficulty understanding why everyone else lived so much in the past. There are several underlying messages such as this one that will make you ponder your own existence.

An intriguing and creative thriller, Mr Kirby has penned a worthy second book. Fabulous job!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! A must read July 9, 2012

I finished Seb Kirby's new novel Double Bind in one sitting - I literally could not put it down. The storyline and the characters are so compelling that you're drawn in from the start. The whole doppelganger idea was so unique and unusual and Seb used it to great affect throughout the book. Put this one on your must read list if you like a good, tight, well-written thriller with a few exotic twists and turns.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent story and really well told July 2, 2012
By Ignite
Format:Kindle Edition
Seb Kirby has taken a new direction in his second novel. It is at heart a deeply intriguing psychological thriller.
I would say it leans towards science fiction although it still contains elements of mystery and murder as in his debut novel Take No More (The murder mystery thriller). Imagine not only the sort of identity theft where someone steals your credit card and passwords but where s/he effectively becomes you. The physical resemblance is so close it fools your nearest and dearest. This is not Sci-fi in the tentacled green monsters or whizzy machines sense but it concerns the potential destruction of our planet at our own hands and those who wish to move in and make use of it.

I began by suspecting the narrator, Raymond Bridges, of concocting the story for his own ends but as the book progressed I found him a sympathetic character and was really rooting for him. Had I been a nail-biter I'd have been up to my elbows by about 85%. The chapters are short so it's tempting just to read another... and another! The book is narrated by a character who is not familiar with the use of the past tense and initially this takes a little getting used to. It doesn't hinder the flow of the story though and I found it an effective ploy for distancing him from others.

This is a book that hooks you early on and as the plot unfolds, it's hard to stop reading. An excellent story and really well told.
