A woman is dead, seemingly beaten by her big-shot lover, who is now up on a murder charge. PI Steve Harlan is hired by the big shot's defense team and quickly begins to doubt his client's innocence. This is the first of a projected series, and it looks like a good one. It's set in Charlotte in the early 1960s, and every detail, from bomb-shelters to Yo-Yos, rings absolutely true. The author, a Charlotte native, brings the locale to life, and it's refreshing to read a traditional private-eye yarn unencumbered by cell phones, laptops, and the Internet. A welcome return to the days when legwork meant actually using your legs.
