5.0 out of 5 stars A true test to see who is the best sports gamer December 12, 2001
Platform for Display:Nintendo NES
If you and your friends are having an argument over who is the best sports gamer, then look no further than any old NES Konami game. Konami was one of the best producers of sports games back in the late 80's early 90's before EA Sports, Sega Sports, and 989 Sports. With those new companies, you can get all the cheats for the games and supe up your teams to be unbeatable. That's not the case with old Konami games.
Take Double Dribble for example. It is in my opinion the best Basketball video game of all time. Sure there are only 4 teams, but they are all equal in stature and prominence. Choose from the Frogs, Falcons, Wave, or Bulls, and it won't matter who you play against because there are no '96 Bulls vs. '01 Bulls that create a complete mismatch. The game play is very responsive, and it's easy to get the hang of it. I love how realistic this game is because your players DO NOT make every single shot like it's NBA Jam or anything. You have to work to get open and shoot intelligent shots (No behind the back 3-pointers).
Now some people may not like the graphics just because it's old, but who cares about graphics when you're playing a fun game. There's not much to a basketball video game than a court, 2 baskets, 10 players, and a ball. You don't need rendered facial expressions or a realistic crowd and arena. All you need is an old NES, two controllers with two buttons, a trash-talking friend, and a copy of Double Dribble. After stripping away all of today's video game bells and whistles, you can finally play at the exact same level, and only then will you and your friend know who is the better sports gamer.
...The old slam dunk video sequences are awesome to watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Basketball Arcade Style January 30, 2010
By JW

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This is definitely a game I would of pumped quarters into at an arcade as a kid. It's a fast paced, back and forth game where you can really pile on the points. And believe it or not defense is a huge factor in this game. Go for the quick steal or block the shot to make up any deficit. This was the first basketball game I remember playing over and over again. Play 4 quarters of basketball. Quarters range from 5mins to a half hour! That's right you could possibly score up to 300 points in this game. The regular rules of the NBA apply here. It's a 5 on 5 game and you can shoot 3 pointers and dunk. The only difference in the rules are offensive fouls. If committed the other team gets to shoot free throws. I found this a little annoying because I kept committing them and almost gave up the lead. Even though it's not NBA licensed the game does feature NBA knock off teams. Seeing how it's an arcade style game and the players are nameless and faceless it doesn't bother me that theres only 5 teams. However in 1 player mode you can't use the Boston Frogs. Being from Boston I wanted to play with my imitation Celtics but can only use them in 2 player mode. Also gameplay is limited. Playing against the computer is just playing a single game against the Boston Frogs in 3 different difficulty settings. That's it. So without friends you could burn out on this pretty quickly. The game also features some awesome cutaway scenes. If you get the dunk right it will cut away to an animation of a guy dunking the ball. Other cool features are the opening sequence of the audience walking into the arena, and the halftime show. While it's not important to gameplay, halftime shows are something that got lost in the transition of new basketball games. The dancing cheerleaders and mascots bring back memories of a pretty good B-Ball game considering the time it came out. Get this Arch Rivals, and Jordan VS. Bird for your retro gaming basketball kick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your everyday Hoop game September 18, 2007
By Gamer X

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This was the original hoop game that got it all started in my opinion. Graphics were less than desirable. Gameplay is exceptional. The programming was such that the game almost seems to WANT to win and when you have simulated dunks going towards the basket it is almost for entertainment value only.

Great game. It's hard to argue with anything that brings you back in time to your childhood when times were good and life was simple. Can not go wrong with any original Nintendo game.
