Review
Julie Moffett's latest is a time-travel historical that will curl your toes. Set in Ireland in the mid-1600s, the air is stirring with unrest and distrust. King Charles will soon lose his head and Cromwell will become Lord Protector. Quite by accident, Faith Worthington, an English agent with a penchant for antique weapons like small double-edged daggers, falls into this time while pursuing a notorious Irish assassin. It is fate, though, that places her in the hands of Miles O'Bruaidar, a wealthy Irish landowner. Although Miles does not know what to make of Faith's unusual clothing and behavior, he is quite sure she is a spy sent by the English. She may even be there to reveal his secret identity of the Irish Lion, an Irish rebel and thorn in the side of the English. Faith will not answer his questions and leaves him uncertain of her loyalties. Faith's confusion over her time-travel experience is matched by her confusion over her growing attraction for Miles. His strength and kindness are demonstrated at every turn -- showing compassion for her fear of the lakes, asking her to read to him and teach him to read, reaching out to her when she shows her vulnerability. His soft touch and gentle manner are hard to resist. Faith finds the wall around her heart crumbling under his very gaze. Miles feels an undeniable attraction to Faith, too. Faith is so very different from other women. She has a wit and intelligence that he finds refreshing. Her short hair and unusual speech are intriguing and only enhance her beauty and grace. He is quite certain that he will never find another woman who can hold his heart and soul so carefully. Faith is driven, though, to find Paddy O'Rourke, the man she hunted in the twentieth century, a man responsible for killing others in cold blood. He now hunts Oliver Cromwell in an attempt to change Ireland's history. Faith also knows he has a gun. Through a strange twist of events, Miles convinces Faith that the only way she will be safe in his time is by marrying him. Marriage would give her Miles' name and protection. Faith's love and desire for Miles is so great that she cannot dissuade him and finally gives in to his marriage proposal, knowing that she still must find Paddy O'Rourke and return to her own time. Through treasonous English officers, traitorous Irish rebels, and twentieth century killers, Faith and Miles run the gauntlet with their love and passion. The only respite they find is in each others' arms. Their love is strong but only time will tell how long it will hold them together. And Faith is ever pursued by the guilt of possibly changing the outcome of history. Miles has helped Faith see that she can open herself up to others without the pain she has suffered in the past. It is up to fate to determine if theirs is a love that can surpass the test of time.If time travel could take you into the arms of a man like Miles, you'd be booked on the first flight out! Julie Moffett fills her books with beautiful metaphors -- Faith, the heroine who has little faith in her own life, and Miles, the man who would travel any distance to be with her. Faith could make a believer out of the harshest skeptic. Time travel aside...this was just a really beautiful love story! The time travel just adds a bit of zest to the plot!Karen Ellington --
