You play as Charlie, the smallest of the Russian stacking dolls, as he attempts to rescue his older siblings from child slavery subjected by the Baron. Charlie's adventures take him to a train station, cruise liner, and zeppelin as he attempts to find all his siblings. Each area offers quite a lot of content to explore and a number of puzzles to solve in order to rescue Charlie's enslaved siblings.

Each area contains a number of different Russian dolls, and each type of doll has a specific ability. Some of the special abilities are used to solve puzzles, but many are included merely for added variety and fun. There are about 30 different types of dolls in each area, most of which are one-of-a-kind. Charlie can hop into progressively larger Russian dolls in order to use the abilities of the various dolls. This core mechanic offers not only a unique gaming experience, but also merges seamlessly with the puzzles.

The puzzles in each area arise as Charlie learns where his siblings are being held and what needs to happen in order to set them free. For example, one sibling is forced to clean the smoke stacks on the cruise ship and Charlie knows his sister will be set free if he can end the cruise. He then sets out to upset the VIPs on the ship and get them to complain to the ship's captain. Without this merging of story and puzzles, I doubt the game would feel nearly as enjoyable, but by merging these two aspects together, I actually felt like my actions were having a worthwhile impact on Charlie's quest.

The story and writing are okay. The story seems to rank second with the primary focus clearly placed on the puzzles. There is an appropriate amount of humor mixed in, to include well-placed references to popular fantasy and science fiction material.

The most unique game in a long time. Had a blast and will play it again once I forget it in a few years. The whole family LOVES it. Visually stunning and seriously not stressful...or violent...which is GREAT. SO CUTE TOO. Every character is so unique and fun.

Amazon has a lot of great games available as downloads. Stacking was one of them. I have been following some of Double-Fines newer games and thought it would be fun to choose an older one on sale.
Stacking is very creative and a lot of fun!
Thank you Amazon for the download services!

I love puzzle games, but they get boring and repetative after a while. Staking was a nice break from the monotony. The puzzles are all interesting and have multiple solutions. I highly suggest challenging yourself to find them all.The hi-jinks are also a nice touch to the game. Again, discovering them all is a fun challenge. This game is also beautiful. The detail in the dolls and scenery is stunning. All in all, it is a great game.

This game was great as far as story line and uniqueness. However, a problem I experienced when playing this game is that when I got to the movie clip part some of the scene would go black or disappear altogether. In addition, if you did not use an xbox controller characters can be hard to navigate and moving around can make you so nauseated that you want to stop the game. My advice, if you buy the game get an xbox controller that is compatible with computers. Even then, movie clips can fade out. I found that if I make the camera face straight ahead and don't move the camera with xbox controller I get to view more of the movie clip. Otherwise, this game is awesome. I loved it. I just wish more game testing and more effort was put into the transition from game play to movie clip.

The Good: Charming visuals and story, stacking dolls is unique, multiple solutions to puzzles is fine to figure out, hi-jinks and challenges for completists

The Bad: No map, no reward for doing side missions, can be beaten in a short few hours, figuring out the puzzles can be a real pain

Double Fine Productions is known for very original and unique games (Psychonauts, Brutal Legend, Costume Quest) but has a hard time creating them, it seems. Stacking is about a small matryoshka doll named Charlie Blackmore who goes on a quest to stop child labor, and stop the evil Baron from enslaving children for his selfish needs. In the process he is saving his family members who are trapped. The game is very charming visually and appeals to all audiences.

The main gameplay in Stacking consists of you stacking inside dolls that are bigger than you and solving puzzles. There are areas that have someone blocking something, or something needs to be triggered, and you have to find the right doll to do this. You get three clues to help you along the which is a lifesaver, because otherwise, it would be very difficult to know what to do. There are so many dolls that stacking each one would take forever. One puzzle involved finding a way into a cell that is holding a doll. The man is a doctor, so you have to find ways to make him feel ill. Stack into a doll blowing air and then a fire chief. Spray him with water then unstack and blow air on him to make him sick. This is just one of multiple solutions. Each area has several ways to solve puzzles, and finding them all will unlock stuff in your hub, but it's nothing useful.

You can also complete hi-jink challenges which is where you use dolls abilities a certain amount of times.
