5.0 out of 5 stars This was THEE one, September 27, 2003
Listen up everybody: This was the album that got Robert on the radio. You had to be alive in 1978 and into music to know the refreshing impact his style had amidst all the disco-clutter at that time. To those who knew his style from this earlier time, his commercial "peak" was more of an anti-climax. I saw him in concert 4 times up close and he was a nonstop bundle of energy. He'd move from one song to the next and each one nearly melted into the next. (no, I was sober!) The rhythms were fantastic. Such an entertainer. And whenever songs from THIS release began, the crowd broke into their wildest cheers. They knew these were the songs that started it all. The ones that introduced us to this fabulous guy. The ones remembered most.... by those who knew him.

4.0 out of 5 stars If this had been a double album, it would be even more fun!, September 22, 2000
Growing up in the '80s, the most I had heard of Robert Palmer was "Addicted To Love" and "Simply Irresistable". And images are a powerful thing, because it seems those videos are the prevailing image people have of Palmer. Yes, he's a classy guy, but that whole womanizing persona is just an image in his music. When one just takes the music into account, they'll find that Palmer is one of the last truly eclectic artists of our times. To some extent, he's the Beck of the last generation with his ability to bust genres at the tip of a hat. That's present on most of his other albums, but DOUBLE FUN finds him in a bit of a rut. The result is an album that is indeed fun to listen to, but Palmer is capable of much greater things. The Caribbean flavor of "Every Kinda People" turned out to be quite infectious, because it was Palmer's first American hit. I can't help but sway reggae-style when that song gets to the chorus. Reggae seems to be the focus of DOUBLE FUN, with "Night People", "Best Of Both Worlds" and "Come Over" all containing that infectious, dance-inducing groove. Turns out even Robert Palmer wasn't safe from the disco craze, for songs like "You Overwhelm Me" and "Where Can It Go?" feature the string sections that typify the whole disco movement. While there are songs that are memorable but not exactly mind-blowing, the only real embarassment on DOUBLE FUN is Palmer's cover of the Kinks' classic "You Really Got Me". While the original helped lay the foundation for heavy metal, Palmer tries to remake it in a reggae style that is not wholly successful. And it's even twice as long as the original. While DOUBLE FUN is not exactly a wonderful album, it proved that even with only his fourth album, Robert Palmer was beginning to reach international stardom with his soulful blend of just about every non-American genre of music. All of Palmer's pre-RIPTIDE albums are worth a look to see that he was much more than the Casanova his videos seemed to have etched into the minds of music lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Double Fun,Quadruple Treat!, November 12, 2003
This is the fourth of Robert Palmer's foursome of elegant,
funk R&B-tinged albums he recorded in the mid to llate 1970's and
it is yet another highpoint."Every Kind Of People" with it's
hihgly catchy steel drum melody is by far the ONLY way to start this album."Best Of Both Worlds" is an excellent Philly-style
dance number offering a welcome alternative to the Staurday Night
Fever infecting much of music at this point and on the strident
"Come Over" and the Sly Stone-style groove of The Kinks classic
"You Really Got Me" Palmer gives up the FONK!!!Think late 70's
pop was dull and shallow? Then pick this up (plus the three albums
that came before it).
