Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

What's not to like about Mellor's third knitting collection? There's color, simplicity, speed, and, best of all, choices for babies to three-year-olds. The title means that each of the 20 patterns includes a twin--in a different color, style, or motif. Everything's presented in a straightforward manner; color pictures are followed by intricately detailed pattern directions. A crib blanket, for instance, is available in either pink hearts or blue stars, while daisies decorate either a cardigan or a sweater. Enjoyable hours of knitting and purling for any brand of experience. Barbara Jacobs

From the Publisher

This exciting new book from Zöe Mellor responds to the needs of today¹s knitter by offering a flexible, innovative approach to knitwear patterns. Each project can be made up in two different ways ‹ patterns are offered with a choice of colorways, styles, and motifs. You choose: knit the windproof fisherman design as a pullover or jacket; the cable-stitch sweater with or without the color; the booties plain or patterned, with or without ties. Give your child a choice between yellow or blue, hearts or stars. Or you can make both designs for siblings eager to maintain their individuality. Each pattern includes instructions for sizes ranging from birth to three years, and the stylish designs are suitable for beginners as well as advanced knitters. Among the 20 projects are a blue patchwork blanket with stars (or pink with hearts); a wool teddy bear (or a tiger) hat with ears; a sweater adorned with big (or little) strawberries; a Fair Isle jacket (or sweater). A book that will please both children and adults, with each delightful creation modeled by twins. Zöe Mellor, a London-based designer, is the author of Head to Toe Knits and Colorful Knits for You and Your Child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Double Knits, March 13, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Double Knits: Pairs of Patterns for Babies and Toddlers (Hardcover)
I have been collecting patterns for children's sweaters for over thirty years, and I keep telling myself that I have enough. Then, a book as appealing as Double Knits comes along...and, of course, I have to have it.

The patterns of these baby and toddler fashions are colorful and stylish...but appear to be do-able for the average knitter with some experience in colorwork knitting. I haven't tried any of the patterns yet, but have read through my favorites and have found no obvious problems with the patterns. I can't wait for the next opportunity to produce a gift of one of these sweaters or blankets.

As an avid knitter, I closely peruse each new knitting book and magazine...looking for the best features of each fashion and for ways to make it more to my liking. With this book, though, it took me three times through the pictures before I even noticed the sweaters. The models (infant and toddler twins) steal this show. What better way, though, to envision what one of these designs will look like on the perfect child in your life?

5.0 out of 5 stars practical and good looking knits, December 7, 2005

This review is from: Double Knits: Pairs of Patterns for Babies and Toddlers (Hardcover)
I've made two of the garments in this book, and am close to completion on the third. I've knitted for many years, and am essentially someone who knits for impact - not someone seeking a technical tour de force.

I've made the Inca hat twice - first for my grandson who wore it nonstop till he grew out of it, and next for a colleague's baby. She and her husband were delighted with it - in fact he wanted a grown up version. I offered to teach him to knit...

I've also made the jester bootees - they took a little concentration to keep on track, but aren't hard.

Currently, I'm making the blue and white cardigan for my grandson - in cotton, not wool, as he and his parents have moved from the chill of English winters to southern California. It's turning out well. Again, it's an example of something that can be whipped up quite quickly, will look excellent with the clothes my grandson wears (lots of New Zealand Pumpkin Patch!), and is classic without being boring.

I plan to make other garments from the book - I'm surrounded by fertile colleagues.

I love this book. I am an avid knitter and I love knitting sweaters for my 15 month old daughter. The colors, styles and patterns in this book are fantastic. My daughter loves to look at this book as well and point to all the cute babies and toddlers.

Highly recommended for knitters who love to knit kid sweaters.
